THEME: Leveraging Intersectionality or LI – What is it and why is it important?
Dr. Fay Cobb Payton – Professor, Researcher, Diversity, Inclusion & Technology Advocate and the author of “Leveraging Intersectionality: Seeing and Not Seeing”
THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:
Intersectionality is a term that was coined by American professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Intersectionality is most commonly defined as the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. This scholarly and progressive view of "valuing diversity" originally encompassed "women" and their experience of oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Yet, the prospective has been extended into include all people who have experienced cultural patterns of oppression. The theory is that cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together and influenced by the intersectional systems of society. Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity. According to one leading expert, "through an awareness and the leveraging of intersectionality, we can better acknowledge and ground the differences among us, gain the benefits of inclusion within both academic and corporation environments and enhance the global society as a whole." What is the Intersectionality and why is it important?
Adult entertainer, Mia LI has just one year of experience within the industry and has done feature, gonzo and kink films. Crohn’s disease may affect as many as 700,000 Americans. Men and Women are equally likely to be affected, and while the disease can occur at any age, Crohn's is more prevalent among adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 35.
Ulcerative colitis may affect as many as 700,000 Americans. Men and Women are equally likely to be affected, and most people are diagnosed in their mid-30s. The disease can occur at any age and older men are more likely to be diagnosed than older women
What is being done to research and find the cause of these diseases? For that we ask Dr. Ellen Li.
Dr. Ellen Li, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist and research scientist, is Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Li oversees the clinical, research and training of a Division that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver.
Dr. Li’s major research interest is on defining the role of the gut microbiome in digestive diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer, and functional GI disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome). Since coming to Stony Brook in 2009, Ellen has launched an interdepartmental Digestive Diseases Biobanking Core, with the generous support of the Simons Foundation, that will provide an infrastructure that encourages collaborations between clinicians and basic scientists in conducting clinical translational research. She is the author of 77 peer-reviewed articles and several chapters in the Textbook of Gastroenterology.

The I AM Group University faculty are excited to share the recording of our gratitude discussion, which originally aired on-line during the week of Thanksgiving, 2013.
Please join us as Harrison Klein, Dagny Grant, Robert DiMattia, Beth Donnelly, Douglass Feller and MarBeth Dunn share some thoughtful insights about the joy and power that can be found in gratitude.
We want to thank those who submitted questions and thoughts about gratitude as the catalyst for our conversation. Here is example of some of the questions that we will be answering:
What does gratitude actually mean?
I am grateful for everything. What is the best way to show this gratitude?
How can one have gratitude in the face of extreme hardship?
How do you be grateful for disease or lack of success?
As a mother how to I keep in gratitude when I watch my two adult children suffering from different difficulties in their bodies and life?
Is it true that you can change your situation simply by having gratitude?
The Ferguson Case - Will Justice Prevail?
People are getting antsy. Supporters of Brown's family want to see Wilson go to trial. The officer's supporters want him to be vindicated. Business owners worry about their property. Officials are concerned about keeping the peace.
The signs pointed to the grand jury drawing near a decision as to whether Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson will be charged with a crime for fatally shooting Michael Brown.
What do you think?
Was this excessive force? Was this self-defense? Are cops properly trained to handle these kind of cases? orAre have they become trigger happy? Why are these kind of cases becoming so "common"? As a parent, what are you telling your son? Do you think the city already knows the verdict? How will the nation respond, if the cop is not considered guilty? Should young Black men around the country be "MORE" concerned? Will justice prevail?
Let's Talk about this case!
Thank you for your continued support.

Hi, My Name Is Paul~Acts-Chapter 22
Paul addresses the crowd in Hebrew (which makes their ears perk up a little) and tells them his life story. This better be good.
He is a Jew who was born in Tarsus and brought up in a good Jewish home where he learned respect for Jewish law and customs. He's a real mensch.
He tells them how he persecuted Christians himself (who doesn't love a little persecution) until he saw a light that blinded him on the road to Damascus and heard the voice of Jesus himself. Impressed yet, everyone?
Then he explains that Ananias restored his sight and encouraged him to be baptized. God himself warned Paul that the people in Jerusalem weren't gonna take to kindly to the new and improved him, so he sent him to the Gentiles.
When the people hear this, they freak out and start screaming that Paul should be killed. The soldiers decide to take Paul aside and flog him.
But before they can start, Paul points out that he was born a Roman citizen and it's not exactly legal for them to flog him.
The Romans are all freaked out by this. If Paul was born a Roman citizen, then tying him up to flog him is a big no-no.
They release him and order him to appear before the Jewish high priests and council.
'America's Stonehenge' attracts visitors — and vandals — from across the globe, but the identity of the man who commissioned the monument remains a secret.
On a Friday afternoon in June 1979, a well-dressed man with a Midwestern accent walked into the Elbert Granite Finishing Company in Elberton, Ga., and commissioned a monument "to the conservation of mankind."
The man identified himself only by the pseudonym Robert C. Christian and said he represented a "small group of loyal Americans who believe in God" who wanted to leave message.
Shrouded in mystery, the hulking granite slabs are engraved in eight languages — English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian — that relay 10 principles for "an Age of Reason." Here's what is written there:
Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
Guide reproduction wisely — improving fitness and diversity.
Unite humanity with a living new language.
Rule passion — faith — tradition — and all things with tempered reason.
Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
Let all nations rule internally, resolving external disputes in a world court.
Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
Balance personal rights with social duties.
Prize truth — beauty — love — seeking harmony with the infinite.
Be not a cancer on the earth — Leave room for nature — Leave room for nature.
