Talk with Tenney: A Conversation with Katherine Hine: Free John Rohrer

    in Current Events

Join me on Human Rights Day, December 10, 2014, from 8-10 PM Eastern for a conversation with Katherine Hine and to hear how you can be part of helping free John Rohrer.  Call (267)521-0167 to be a part of the program.

Katherine Hine is an inactive attorney in Ohio and mother of John Rohrer, the 34 year old writer/musician being kept locked up in state facilities since September, 2009, force drugged for more than 3 ½ years. Thanks to support from the Anti-Psychiatry movement and lawsuits involving 5 separate courts in Ohio, John, as of November 4, 2014 is no longer forcibly drugged. But he remains hospitalized by the very people who have been battering and retaliating against him for the past 2 years. Support from the human rights community is more needed today than ever, as John and his attorney attack Ohio’s mental health SYSTEM in the courts of its state capital. A demonstration is planned for January at the State House. On December 10, 2014, Human Rights Day, it may be timely to reflect on some of the rights we all as citizens still have on paper, and what that really means in practice in America today. Talk with Tenney: A Conversation with Craig Lewis

    in Current Events

On December 3, 2014, 8-10 PM Eastern, join Talk with Tenney for a conversation with Craig Lewis. As an anti-authoritarian, Craig struggles with the often unyielding power that is at times used forcefully to subjugate people who are unwilling to maintain the status quo. In Craig’s experience working in the mental health recovery community as a Certified Peer Specialist, he has found himself often feeling crushed under the boot of power, status and class. Craig believes that the best way to get to the life he wants is dependent on battling through the barriers that are in his way, despite the oppressive nature of power, status and class. Craig openly identifies as a marginalized person yet he is fearless in fighting for the better life he wants and helping others live happier, healthier and more satisfying lives. Craig’s favorite topics to discuss are the ‘Better Days’ workbook,  punk rock, and the power of self-directed radical human powered transformation. Craig also loves talking about cats, specifically, ‘Max the Cat Lewis’, Craig’s official ‘Maxcot of Recovery’.

Craig has authored and published the Better Days – A Mental Health Recovery Workbook. Craig based the Better Days workbook on his personal life and recovery, and every page has been used successfully in peer group settings. A Better Days support group facilitation guide is currently being developed as are Spanish, German and French language versions of the Better Days workbook. Craig also has edited and published You’re Crazy Volume One which compiles first-hand accounts of people from the punk rock scene who live with mental health struggles, addiction and trauma. A second volume of You’re Crazy is currently in the works.

The Biz With D: Interview w/ Anthony Lewis

    in Music

It’s almost as though Anthony Lewis love for music is ingrained in him; his love of art, somewhat hereditary. His parents were stage performers who could both sing and act. And it is apparent that neither the rhythm, nor the beat, missed Lewis.

Born in Los Angeles, CA, Lewis first realized his vocal potential at age 6. Though he shared his talent in church, singing remained a personal hobby until he and his sister took to YouTube. As interest piqued among viewers, so did Lewis’ desire to pursue his gift. And his strides are apparent. While singing for producer Donnie Scantz, he impressed industry veteran, Garnett March, and was soon signed to The Chemists. The rest is history-in-the-making as he prepares his debut album and single. With influences ranging from Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake to Michael Jackson, Lewis wants his sound and content to reflect his reality. By delving into and remaining true to his experiences as a teen, he hopes to create timeless music. And it’s exactly what he is meant to do.

    Book Discussion with fran lewis

    in Writing

Book Discussion welcomes Dr. Glenn Parrish the author of The Renaissance of Aspirin. This is the story of Anita Thomas and Jack Wheaton, two young doctors unwittingly in possession of a designer antibody for the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome. The new drug is effective, but dangerously flawed. The problem is Anita Thomas has developed a cheap, safe alternative agent. Naturally, after expenditure of a fortune in development, the drug manufactures are not at all pleased with her. The pieces unfold, as we follow Anita and Jack from beautiful upscale midtown to the seedier downtown counterparts of Boston and Atlanta over shadowed by deadly stalkers and embellished by amorous often comically frustrating misadventures. The Renaissance of Aspirin is peppered with industrial espionage, suspense and passion as the chase is on for the first cure for fibromyalgia. Entangled with colorful comrades such as Dasher Clay; Stormi Seales and Khandi Barr in their camp, Anita and Jack barely keep ahead of the treacherous cabal of nemeses; Luciana Velasquez and Jason Brasil led by the Über-villain, Orson Quirk. Paced in the tradition of The Pelican Brief, Coma or a contemporary Maltese Falcon, The Renaissance of Aspirin is both plot and character driven with a ly credible McGuffin at its core. These complex characters are funny, mean, desperate, lonely and at the same time very humanly imperfect. Readers will find their prickly exploits thoroughly entertaining. Dr. Parrish will discuss his novel and explain Fibromyalgia to our audience. Please join me at four eastern, three central and two mountain. I am your host Fran Lewis editor of MJ magazine.
