Lewis Hine was the photographer whose early 20th century photos of working children shaped child labor laws in the United States.
For the past seven years, Joe Manning has been conducting the Lewis Hine Project, an effort to track down and interview the descendants of child laborers photographed by Lewis Hine in the early 1900s. His work has resulted in stories about the lives of over 300 of those children. The project has been featured on numerous National Public Radio news and interview programs, and in a lengthy article in Yankee Magazine. It is now also a current exhibit at the Lawrence, Massachusetts History Center.
Join Fieldstone Common host, Marian Pierre-Louis on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 1pm EST as she talks with Joe Manning about this fascinating project.

She will also discuss her other acting experience and projects. Her film credits include: Dead Broke, Starving Hysterical Naked, Almost in Love, The Better Man, Chaos Theory, Area Q, and Locked in a Garage Band. However, Leslie is probably best known for creating and starring in Miracle in Rwanda, a one-woman live show based on the life of Immaculée Ilibagiza, who survived the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Over 10,000 theatergoers in six continents have seen the show. This talented actress also played Dorothy Dandridge in another one-woman show titled Yesterday Came Too Soon at the National Black Theatre in Harlem.
Leslie’s role in With Child is her first appearance as a lead in a feature film. This unique movie tells the touching story of a widowed construction worker trying to rebuild his life as a single dad while struggling with the romantic advances of his eccentric new employer (played by Leslie). "When I read the script, I thought it would be a good fit for my first film as lead producer," Leslie explains. "I love the message of the film: What we choose now affects our past.”

Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author and educator Caroline Alexander Lewis to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her thought-provoking new book JUST BACK OFF AND LET US TEACH.
From Craig Lewis: Our animal companions mean the world to us. For those of us who have struggled throughout our lives, who have been abandoned, mistreated, subjugated and disempowered, we know the damage that has impacted our psyche. I am one of these people. I know what it means to be damaged to my core. There have been many times in my life when I was unsure if I would make it the next day. There have been many times in my life that the pain I was experiencing was too much to manage and that the prospect of never hurting again was a beautiful thought to have. Even in the past three months, abject despair has, at times, consumed me. However, there was something different going on this time. I have an animal companion in my life who is depending on me to care for him. No matter how bad things became I felt a responsibility to him. His name is Max the Cat. Max the Cat is a rescue. He has experienced abandonment two times in his short life. No matter what was going on with me, I simply could not abandon him. I know the brutal pain of abandonment. Every day I spent time with him, patting him, brushing him and singing to him. He responded by smothering me with his love. He saw and heard me cry every day, sometimes uncontrollably, and he knew of my pain and suffering and he gave me his unconditional love. Without Max the Cat being in my life these past few months, I would be dead. I love Max the Cat and he has helped me stay alive and his love has helped heal me in ways that I have never experienced before. We want to hear from listeners about your precious and loved animal companions. Many of you may have had a loving animal companion who may no longer be with you. This is an opportunity to honor and celebrate all the beauty they brought to your life. For those of us who know the life impacting love of an animal, this is a time to celebrate this love. Bark Bark. Meow Meow. Ribbit.
