We knew from polling data that a majority of Americans, 54 percent, favored legalizing the use of marijuana. Now that we’ve begun publishing an editorial series arguing for an end to marijuana prohibition, we know that a majority of Times readers appear to favor legalization, too, and in far greater numbers than the population at large.
We asked readers on the main editorial if they were for legalization, against it or unsure. Forty-one said they were unsure, 206 against and 4043 for. (That’s as of 12:30 p.m. on Monday.) Obviously the comments section doesn’t amount to a scientific poll, but the lopsided reaction indicates that, among Times readers, there’s a virtual consensus: The federal ban on marijuana makes no sense.
AS MORE AND MORE STATES LEGALIZE RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA USE....WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE MASS AMOUNT OF PEOPLE ALREADY IN PRISON FOR POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA?
WILL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CHANGE THE SENTENCING LAWS AS WELL?
Welcome to Our Own Voices Live with your hosts: Angela Thomas and Rodney Smith
Our topics today are, President Barack Obama's remarks regarding the legalization on Marijuana.
"As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol," Obama said.
Do the positives of legalizing marijuana out weigh the negatives?
Are our communities prepared for the byproducts of legalization?
Have we blown the lid off of pandora's box?

In cultures where there is an extreme imbalance in the ratio of male to female, due to wars or other tragedies that drastically reduced the male polulation, people choose to make cultural adjustments for the sake of the survival of the community. Men are allowed to marry more than one wife, to give every woman an opportunity to have a husband and raise her children in a family that includes a father who is present. This system was intended to prevent the misuse of women as concubines, mere sex partners who have no public respect or legal rights. Better Nikka Co-Founder Minera Habeel discusses the institution of polygyny as a remedy for society's ills and the responses of women at the thought of men legally marrying multiple wives.
