World Kitchen Presents: Erika Beckwith and Robin Hunt
Cocktails and Conversation hosts Erika Beckwith and Robin Hunt know how stressful the wedding-planning process can be. After all, over the past decade, they’ve done it hundreds of times for their own clients in the Detroit and Atlanta areas. However, says Erika, “Our advice to you is take a breath, make yourself a French martini and calm down. Planning your big day can seem like an overwhelming task, but if you break it down into bite-sized pieces, it can be manageable. The first question you need to ask yourself is, Do I see my wedding as modern and contemporary, or classic and traditional? After that, do I envision it taking place in the spring, summer, fall or winter? And then, what would be my ideal number of guests?”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Angela Gala
When your surname’s a synonym for festive occasions, we’re guessing you’ve got something on the, ah, ball. So when Angela Gala of Rogers & Gala Event Planning weighs in on the benefits of a wedding planner, we listen. “They can help save you money, they can help you select the right venue,” she tells I Do Radio host Angela Chester. “The biggest benefit we can offer is working with you from the very beginning. We recently had a bride who’d chosen her cake vendor, and it wasn’t someone we were familiar with, but she’d tasted a cake the vendor had baked and thought it was just wonderful. Come the day of the event, she brings the cake, and a piece on the back was falling off, some appliques were falling off and the chocolate was starting to melt.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Samantha Goldberg
If you know what’s good for you, you won’t arrive late at a wedding planned by Samantha Goldberg of Style Network. “My biggest peeve is people who walk in as the bride is about to walk down the aisle and they’re trying to get in front of her so they don’t miss her approaching the alter,” she tells Wedding Podcast host Robert Allen. “But I just tell them, ‘You are not going. You are so not going. You’re going to wait, because that’s really disrespectful to the bride.’ So many times I’ve seen guests come into the church, scurry to the wall and try to race the bride down aisle.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Saukok Tiampo
As a cross of sorts between Pinterest and QVC, Saukok Tiampo’s Revel platform has been a blessing for many a DYI bride. Users can browse pics of everything from invites to jewelry to kitchenware by category, color or style. And if something strikes her fancy, she can click directly through to the manufacturer to buy it. “There’s a ton of images out there and often they’ve been repurposed over and over again. But there’s very little source information about how to make these things happen, which can be very frustrating for people who don’t have planners, Saukok tells Wedding Planning Radio host Jeannie Uyanik. “We’ve tried to make it easy as possible to find the original source from one screen.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Katie Martin
Traditionalists may shudder at the notion of doing away with elaborate wedding invites, but Katie Martin of Eco-Beautiful Weddings says that’s one of the keys to green nuptials. “Some of the inserts may not be necessary, like a reception card or an inner envelope,” she tells Green & Gorgeous host Renee Ross. “Another thing is you can say is ‘Reception to follow at such and such a location,’ and have a small insert that gives not only the hotels and travel information, but the location of the reception and the venue’s website. There are also some post-consumer-waste invites on the market that do a great job of looking classy.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Kerry Vincent
Cake designer Kerry Vincent insists that 30 days is far from sufficient lead time for booking your wedding baker. “There’s so much rubbish on the Internet and editorial advice in magazines that says, Oh you only need to get your cake designer a month before. That’s the worst possible thing they can do!” the Food Network Challenge judge tells Core Buisness Group host Tim Jacquet. “If you want a cake that’s unique, you need to give the designer at least three months. If that designer is bombarded with requests for huge tiered cakes just a month out, what’s going to result is shoddy design work. In many ways it’s easier to get your dress than it is to get your cake. Because there are hundreds of dress designers out there whose products you can readily get. But if you’re living in a small or medium sized town, your choices on the confection front will be much narrower.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Leah McCarthy
Sure your wedding guests shed a tear as you tie the knot and smooch the groom, but what’s not-so-secretly on the minds of many during the ceremony is, What’s to eat? So catering should always be at the top of every couple’s list. “Guests want to be able to recognize the food. And when their bellies are welcomed with that yummy comfort food their mamas made, they’re very happy guests,” says Weddings with Leah host Leah McCarthy. “So when first meeting with your caterers, ask them how they’d incorporate your theme into the menu. That will add more surprises in terms of conveying who you and your groom are. One popular way to start the reception is offering a signature drink at the bar. But be sure to ask how many bartenders the bartender will have per guest. I recommend per 50 guests for a full bar, and one per 75 for a beer and wine bar.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: John Rudy
Brevity’s not only the soul of wit, but of wedding toasts too. “There’s a funny story that happened last year at a wedding I was catering. The bride was terrified that her brother and dad would go on forever with their speeches at the reception—and of course say something inappropriate,” John Rudy of Food For Thought tells The Wedding 101 Show host David Rothstein. “We told her, ‘We can help them. We’ve got outlines that are perfectly suited to giving a wedding toast. It’s a foolproof way of making sure they stick to the script.’ She said, ‘They’re not going to use it, but give it to me anyway.’ So we gave the brother and dad the outline—these guys were not public speakers—and they said, ‘This is great. We would’ve gotten up there and fumbled all over ourselves.’ They got through the toast in under two minutes.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Steve Paster
Before the dress or caterer or cake or even preacher is booked, your guests have got to know to save the date for your wedding. So ordering invites is one of the first things couples need to do after getting engaged. But not all stationers are the same, says Steve Paster of Alpine Creative Group. “Most invitation boutiques are brokers. You walk in and look at books, and you work with a graphic designer. Then they turn around and send out the order to their vendors,” he tells Wedding Planning Radio host Jeannie Uyanik. “But in my company, we’re the broker and manufacturer under one roof, so our timelines are a bit quicker than most people would be accustomed to. There are some invites we can manufacture in one week. Then there are very complex invitations that might involve mounting, layering, dye-cutting, laser cutting—those generally take about four weeks.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Ray Swash
Despite the name of his firm—Dream Weddings—Ray Swash is a realist, though an ever romantic one. “In our references, we began to get responses from couples saying thank you for the perfect day. But the perfect wedding doesn’t mean that everything goes perfect,” he tells Moving You Forward host Heidi Cowie. “It’s more that we can provide for the bride and groom a day, a ceremony where they love it. My goal for every couple is that someone—if not many guests—comes up to them after the event and says, ‘That was so you.’ In other words, it really reflected the heart, the style, the personality of the bride and groom.”

World Kitchen Presents Wedding Day Radio: Joann Ambriz
What’s a groom to do to get suited up for his big day? Joann Ambriz of Formally Modern Tuxedo has all the answers. “I always tell my clients, I can tell you everything about what’s fashionable right now, but you have to be comfortable with what you’re wearing. So I advise them to think it through,” she tells The Wedding 101 Show host David Rothstein. “Do they like things that are more relaxed? Do they like things that are more fitted? Are there particular color schemes they feel more comfortable with? And then I ask them to come in and try some things on. Once we have the tux down, we start with accessories. Whether or not the groom wants to wear a vest, does he want to match the bride with a white or ivory color, or prefer to stay with a classic black?”
