Special Guest Sada Sat Simran Singh of the Chardikala Jatha. We will discuss Raag Kirtan from his experience and perspective as a highly accomplished musician who plays traditional, classical Sikh kirtan internationally...and often. He and the Chardi Kala Jatha are specifically honored to play at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Raag is the classical form of music of India. North Indian Classical Music is based off of a system of scales or modes which have certain rules to their movement, the mood they inspire, the time of day that they are sung, and vocal techniques used.
We will talk about the experience and transformative power of listening to and playing Raag Kirtan. In Kundalini Yoga, we chant mantras in monotone, simple melodies, and sometimes quite complex melodies, but seldom in raag. From Sada Sat Simran Singh’s perspective and training, what is it about raag that takes the experience deeper? What is it about raag kirtan that ‘grabs’ him and compels him to devote so much of his life to it?
SACRED SOUND by Alanna Kaivalya - Nada Yoga — or the yoga of sacred sound — often gets short shrift in the West because mantras and kirtan aren’t readily understood. However, its chants are held sacred in all types of Eastern spiritual practice for the way they can help practitioners bypass the day-to-day mental chatter of the mind in order to reach a transcendent state of awareness and self-realization.
In Sacred Sound: Discovering the Myth & Meaning of Mantra and Kirtan (New World Library, April 15, 2014), celebrated yoga teacher and author Alanna Kaivalya explores both the myth and meaning behind twenty-one mantras, or chants, that stem from the yogic tradition. She also describes the myth, text, or context each mantra comes from or is associated with, and explains how these rich myths relate to our modern-day spiritual practice.
Sacred Sound offers practical guidance for starting, developing, and/or improving a mantra practice. Each mantra and kirtan in the book includes the Sanskrit, transliteration, and translation. Alanna’s clear retellings of the pertinent myths highlight modern-day applications so that readers discover their own personal connection to the practice.
Alanna Kaivalya is the author of Sacred Sound. She is the yoga world’s expert on Hindu mythology and mysticism. Her podcasts have been heard by more than one million people worldwide, and her Kaivalya Yoga Method melds mythology, philosophy, and yoga. Visit her online at http://www.alannak.com.
So many of us have been practicing yoga for years – but do we really practice yoga? Are we just using it as a form of exercise? Do you take what you practice in yoga and incorporate it into your daily life?
Whether you’ve just started a yoga practice or you’ve been practicing yoga for decades, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy and power behind the sacred phrases that contain deeper wisdom to illuminate your yogic path.
Expand your horizons by learning how to touch the deepest parts or yourself that few other spiritual disciplines can reach.

Kirtan is a powerful, transformational spiritual practice that is a central component of bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion. Bhakti yoga is considered the easiest path to moksha, or liberation, in this age. Kirtan opens the heart, purifies the entire being and surrounding atmosphere and stills the mind for meditation. It’s an easy, enjoyable and fulfilling path to transformation.
The Kirtan Wallahs was formed in 2004 by Natesh (Craig Ramsell) to create an ongoing kirtan experience open to all in Sedona, Arizona, and surrounding communities. Ramsell has lead call-and-response kirtan almost every Sunday evening at 7pm, at Plaza Kailasa, Suite K, in West Sedona. Admission is free and open to all, and donations are welcome.
