Kathleen McCleary Discusses A Simple Thing

    in Books

Join Book Club Girl as she welcomes Kathleen McCleary to discuss her new novel, A Simple Thing.
When Susannah Delaney discovers her young son is being bullied and her adolescent daughter is spinning out of control, she moves them to remote, rustic Sounder Island to live for a year. A simple island existence—with no computers or electricity and only a one-room schoolhouse—is just what her over scheduled East Coast kids need to learn what's really important in life. But the move threatens her marriage to the man she's loved since childhood, and her very sense of self.
For Betty Pavalak, who moved to Sounder to save her own troubled marriage, the island has been a haven for fifty years. But Betty also knows the guilt of living with choices made long ago and actions that cannot be undone. The unlikely friendship between Susannah and Betty ignites a journey of self-discovery for both women and brings them both home to what they love most. A Simple Thing moves beyond friendship, children, and marriages to look deeply into what it means to love and forgive—yourself.

Author Kathleen Boucher Author of the book "A Simple Idea to Empower Kids"

The Creative Child Awards Program has recognized Kathleen Boucher’s books.  She received the 2014 Book of the Year Award in the Books for Teens category and the 2014 Preferred Choice Award in the Kid’s Books category. The Silver Recognition Award from Mom’s Choice Awards was given to A Simple Idea to Empower Kids for kids eight and younger.

Boucher hopes that children around the world read “A Simple Idea to Empower Kids” and that it inspires them to follow their dreams.  She is a registered nurse whose specialty is intensive care nursing.  Overcoming polio in her childhood challenged her to find her inner strength, and now aspires to help other kids do the same.  She parented her own two children following the three principles she outlines in this book, with the goal of nurturing them to become happy, confident adults.

"My goal," Boucher says, "has always been to do something that brought value to the entire world.  John F. Kennedy had the right idea when he said 'Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.'  Let us empower our kids to help them find their purpose and live their lives authentically doing something they love.  Let us teach them early that they can do, be, or have anything they desire.  The sky is the limit!"
