During this episode, we explore the healing power of Laughter and Laughter Yoga! A daily dose of laughter is the one solution having the power to unwind stress and uplift joy; the power to slow down a racing heart and strengthen the mind; the power to raise the spirit and fend off pessimism…and all in an instant! Created in 1995, Laughter Yoga is a unique modality that can directly tap anyone into the healing power of laughter. Our Co-Host, Rob Fournier, recently received his Laughter Yoga instructor certification, and we are excited to experience this fun healing modality with you on the air!
Hailing from Mumbai, India, Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor, and his wife Madhuri Kataria, a yoga instructor, tapped into their extensive combined wellness knowledge to create Laughter Yoga using a combination of rhythmic clasping, deep breathing, light stretching, and laughter exercises. Based on scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter, this powerfully healing modality has spread to where today there are more than a thousand laughter clubs in over 72 countries. Clinical research has proven that laughter lowers the level of stress hormones, such as epinephrine and cortisol, in the blood. Additional benefits of laughter:
-Boost immune system
-Reduces blood pressure
-Expands lung capacity
-Lifts mild depression
-Increases oxygen to the lungs

My first experience with Laughter Yoga is very memorable. I didn't want to go and thought that it would be a complete waste of time. And, I declared that I was not planning to engage in "senseless" laughing. Well they proved me wrong. I loved it and laughed along with everyone else - and couldn't wait for the next session a month later!
Brigitte Keane, dear friend and longtime experienced Laughter Yoga Teacher, was trained by Dr Matan Kataria, original founder of Laughter Yoga. Laughter Yoga is celebrating its 20 Anniversary and is practiced in over 60 countries.
Health benefits of laughter include but are not limited to: no stress, feel good hormones, every one can do it without special clothing/equipmen, everyone benefits, get in touch with your inner child, becomes a way of life, cutting edge, importance of anti-stress and laughter. There are many applications of laughter that will be discussed during the show.
Brigitte cannot think of anything more needed in our society by every one. Ten minutes of laughter equals 30 minutes of aerobic exercise ~ Jogging for the organs and intestines!

This week, in continuing with our month-long series on cosmic humor, the Cosmic Citizen will feature Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from Mumbai, India popularly known as the ‘Guru of Giggling’ (London Times). He is the founder of the Laughter Yoga Clubs movement started in 1995. While researching the benefits of laughter, he was amazed by the number of studies showing the profound physiological and psychological benefits of laughter. He decided to find a way to deliver these benefits to his patients and other people. The result is Laughter Yoga, a unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing. It allows anyone to laugh without the use jokes, humor or comedy. Started with just five people in a public park in Mumbai, India in 1995, Laughter Yoga has grown into a worldwide movement of more than 6000 Laughter Yoga clubs in over 60 countries.
Spreading rapidly in USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, South East Asia, China and Africa, this new concept has been widely covered by prestigious publications like the TIME magazine, National Geographic, and the Wall Street Journal and featured on CNN, BBC, US networks and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Did you know children laugh an average of 300 times a day? Adults? Just 10 laughs a day. Study from Japan published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests laughter can alleviate inflammation of skin for up to two hours at a time. Could laughter be a tool you use more of this year to help alleviate stress, heal your body and mind?
According to Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of laughter yoga, laughter improves digestion and releases chemicals like neuropeptides with antioxidant properties.
