Jesus and Joseph, Jonah and the Whale

    in Education

The lives of Jesus and Joseph:

Jesus and Joseph had the following in common.  They both:

    WERE HATED WITHOUT A CAUSE

IT WAS FORETOLD THAT ONE DAY THEY WOULD RULE

WERE REJECTED AND CONDEMNED TO DIE

    STRIPPED OF THEIR CLOTHING

    BECAME A SERVANTS

SOLD FOR SILVER INTO THE HANDS OF GENTILES (Joseph 20 pieces Jesus 30 pieces)

    RESISTED TEMPTATION

    NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS

    FALSELY ACCUSED

THEIR PEOPLE DID NOT RECOGNIZE THEM

THEIR BROTHERS WERE TROUBLED WHEN THEY MET THEM

THERE WAS REVELATION AND RECONCILIATION IN THE END

Jonah and the Whale:  The story of Jonah and the Whale starts with the following Bible verse:

Jonah 1:1-2 (KJV) Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Upon receiving instruction from the Lord to warn the people of Nineveh of their coming judgment of God, Jonah attempts to hide from God in a boat, but that doesn't work.  Then ends up in a fishes belly, and is subsequently spat up onto the shore of the city Nineveh.  He finally gets around to performing the task which God chose for him, and he warns the people of Nineveh that God is going to judge them, unless they repent.  They repent, and this makes Jonah angry, because he doesn't feel that they deserve forgivenss.  What is the moral to this story?  First:  You cannot hide from God.  Second:  There is always hope for forgiveness of sin.

    Oklahoma State Senator Joseph Silk

    in Politics Conservative

Oklahoma State Senator Joseph Silk has introduced a bill that would allow religious entities or businesses “operating consistently with sincerely held religious beliefs” to operate in accordance with those beliefs without facing legal consequences for doing so. In other words, if you are a wedding photographer or a bakery and you do not wish to provide your services for a same-sex wedding, based on religious objections, then there would be no legal consequences for refusing that business. Senator Silk has been facing a firestorm from LGBT activist since he gave an interview to the New York Times about the bill. The harsh push back has come as a result of the Times story taking a partial quote where he said that LGBT people “don’t have a right to be served in every single store,” He has responded to the Times quotes by posting a statement saying “Yes I did say that homosexuals do not have the right to be served in every store, just as I do not believe that I, my family, or anyone else have the right to be served in every private business. The right to provide services should be the decision of the business owners. We need to keep our country free and stop this radical, intolerant, movement.” We'll talk about the bill and the controversy.

Later we'll talk about some of the big stories from the past week. Don't forget about "Outrage of the Week" and "Headlines You May Have Missed".

    A Conversation With Joel West

    in Comedy

Joel West is a comedian and writer and has been known to talk to lamp posts. He was born in Montreal in 1961 and as a child appeared in the Oscar nominated film “Lies my Father Told Me”. In 1976, while Joel was at summer camp, his parents moved to Toronto. Having tracked them down, Joel also relocated. At the University of Toronto he received several scholarships and awards, made the Dean’s list and, fearing that he might actually complete something, dropped out in his third year. He has worked as a short order cook, salesman, bookkeeper, messenger, technical support person and has received unemployment benefits on more than one occasion.

Joel has performed extensively in the Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto corridor and has also performed in Vancouver, Kitchener, Waterloo, Hamilton, London and Niagara Falls. He appeared in the, soon to be released film, Four Squared production’s “Conversion” a dark comedy of manners, written by Canadian author Kate MacDonald. He has also appeared at the Montreal Fringe Theatre Festival.

Joel has recently lost close to 100 lbs and is writing a book about his experience.
