Guests are Jena Ball from Startled Cat -the writer, illustrator and creative lead on the CritterKin Project , and Vanessa Budnick, Humane Educator / Grants Manager SPCA of Wake County talking about a subject that has become near and dear to both CritterKin's and Vanessa's (and through her the SPCA's) hearts -puppy mills and forever homes. www.critterkin.com There are a couple of heartwarming stories that will be shared: Vanessa adopted Ernest - a puppy mill survivor who was rescued by the SPCA and the Humane Society. She has experienced the horrific conditions these dogs live in and the kind of permanent damage that can occur. Ernest almost died from the neglect he experienced, though he is doing GREAT now thanks to the terrific care he received by the vets associated with the puppy mill bust and Vanessa's love.
The second piece is the story of Ricky Bobby, a little dachshund whose story recently made the news: http://www.wncn.com/story/21923861/story-on-paralyzed-puppy-mill-dog-touches-thousandsRicky's hind legs are paralyzed due to the neglect he experienced in the puppy mill, but he has since been adopted by an angel (Megan Bliss) and is getting around in a cart she built for him. www.spcawake.org CritterKin and the SPCA both believe strongly that the solution to puppy mills is education. People need to not only learn to adopt from shelters rather than buy from pet stores that get their dogs from puppy mills, but learn the basics of pet care so that the dogs get adopted into forever homes. Host Charmaine Hammond is the author of On Toby's Terms (see www.ontobysterms.com). She also authored Toby The Pet Therapy Dog & His Hospital Friends, GPS Your Best Life and Toby Says Be a Buddy Not a Bully. Since our last unscripted episode wasn't quite as unscripted as we'd hoped given the new Catching Fire TV spot and TheCapitol.PN relaunch, we figured we might as well have a little fun before the premiere next week! We'll spend the whole night pulling all sorts of thought-provoking and crazy topics out of our trusty grab bag/topic cornucopia. We'll also briefly chat about our experience interviewing Sam Claflin and Jena Malone on Sunday.
