On this week's radio show, my special guest is Grammy Award winning artist, Janis Ian. She was catapulted into the spotlight at age 15, when her soul-wrenching song about an interracial relationship, "Society's Child," became a hit. Many radio stations refused to play it because of its controversial subject matter. Ian's legendary "At Seventeen" earned two Grammy Awards and five nominations. Both songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She was also the first singer to perform on the very first Saturday Night Live. She has experienced discrimination and has always risen above it. Janis will share some of her experiences and go inside the music.
The conversation begins Sunday at 11am EST on 88.7FM, WICR (Indianapolis area) and worldwide at richardbrendan.com.

Ian Murray's Bio:
Imagine being the only person in your class, in a primary school with 43 children. Imagine then, starting high school at 12, with more than 160 strangers in your year level. Ian Murray, owner of Dynamic Speaking, knows what it's like to find yourself in a new place and face the challenge of communicating to connect with your community. Working with some of the largest Information Technology organisations in Australia; experiencing the challenges of communication locally and internationally in such organisations; and having a life-long interest in the "Science of Patterns", Ian brings an analytical, objective approach to business - and speaking. With training as a business coach, and a natural facilitator, Ian has run business networking and mastermind groups for several years. He was recognised as "Facilitator of the Year" for the Australian Smart small business forums in 2013. Coaching hundreds of people to improve their communication and leadership skills, Ian helps business owners, leaders, educators and speakers, to influence others more effectively.
Folk pop legend Janis Ian joins host Robin Milling to talk about her autobiography Society's Child My Autobiography. Spoken by Ian herself, it has garnered her a Spoken Word Grammy nomination. While listening you are taken through her lifetime, through her childhood growing up on a chicken farm and then in East Orange, New Jersey; a predominantly black neighborhood where witnessing interracial relationships inspired her to write Society's Child when she was only 13. Making her the youngest recording artist of her time at 15, it should have been a happy time but the firestorm of death threats she received caused her to live in a state of constant fear.
Wide-eyed you can't stop listening to all 12 hours and 13 minutes of 20 chapters. Some begin with Ian singing, then narrating her uncensored stories of late night jam sessions with Jimi Hendrix, her friendship with Janis Joplin who called her 'the other Janis,' and her surprise LSD trip. Ian doesn't shy away from the unfathomable such as her dentist molesting her and her abusive marriage. She unabashedly recounts her sexual escapades; coming out and going back into the closet, and ultimately marrying the woman in her life. Never afraid to sing about the ugly things, the underdog and the disenfranchised; there was always music, which Ian says saved her.
