Multi Grammy Award Winner Janis Ian won her 2nd Grammy Award in 2013 for her audio book Society's child. This was out of 9 total nominations over the years in 8 categories. She had stiff competition - she was up against President Bill Clinton, First Lady Michelle Obama, Rachael Maddow, and Ellen DeGeneres!
Janis has recently released her new children's book called The Tiny Mouse. She will talk to Take 2 Radio on Wednesday, Oct. 9th at 6pm eastern time. There is so much more you may or may not know about Janis so tune in to find out!
Folk pop legend Janis Ian joins host Robin Milling to talk about her autobiography Society's Child My Autobiography. Spoken by Ian herself, it has garnered her a Spoken Word Grammy nomination. While listening you are taken through her lifetime, through her childhood growing up on a chicken farm and then in East Orange, New Jersey; a predominantly black neighborhood where witnessing interracial relationships inspired her to write Society's Child when she was only 13. Making her the youngest recording artist of her time at 15, it should have been a happy time but the firestorm of death threats she received caused her to live in a state of constant fear.
Wide-eyed you can't stop listening to all 12 hours and 13 minutes of 20 chapters. Some begin with Ian singing, then narrating her uncensored stories of late night jam sessions with Jimi Hendrix, her friendship with Janis Joplin who called her 'the other Janis,' and her surprise LSD trip. Ian doesn't shy away from the unfathomable such as her dentist molesting her and her abusive marriage. She unabashedly recounts her sexual escapades; coming out and going back into the closet, and ultimately marrying the woman in her life. Never afraid to sing about the ugly things, the underdog and the disenfranchised; there was always music, which Ian says saved her.

Today on Global Freedom Network we are interviewing Ian Mackenzie a well known film maker! We must love our own aliveness so deeply, that we reject any further participation in a system that does not honour the gifts with which we have been bestowed. We must love the world so deeply that we have no choice but to bow in service to the beauty that is waiting for us, patiently, to re-member. My short film, in collaboration with Charles Eisenstein and his book of the same name, was recently featured in the massively popular site Upworthy. Part of their appeal is the enticing titles they use to refurbish great videos/articles they find on the web. Here's what they wrote about my film: Thank you for joining me on this journey. Even after more than 7 years of changing the way you listen to the internet, your friends in podcasting are still able to bring you an unusual episode, even by their own admittedly unusual standards!
This week’s show is quite the grab-bag …
It all starts with longtime listener (and key collaborator in The Lady Killers) Shaun Parker telling an amazing true story about his quest to deliver home-made candy to Robert Redford.
Then, Dean interviews his old pal, writer, sketch comic and comic book creator Ian Boothby and Ian’s wife, artist and comic book creator Pia Guerra. They all talk San Diego Comic-Con.
Finally, Phil returns to discuss several movies with Dean.
Something for everyone? We like to think so!
The fireworks show for the Boston Celtics has been canceled. Therefore, feel free to join the candle lighting over at Celtics Beat.
Larry H. Russell may not have a co-pilot for this week’s show. But the business class section is full. Ian Eagle, voice of the Brooklyn Nets on the YES Network, as well as CBS Sports, joins LHR to talk about what’s going on in Brooklyn. What’s the deal with the former Celtics Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett? Is KG definitely coming back? Why did Pierce leave? And what the heck happened with Jason Kidd? And hey, should the Celtics expect anything from Marcus Thornton?
Speaking of fireworks - it seems the only fireworks there’s been has been between Celtics blogosphere members and ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. Recently, Jeff has been very critical of Rajon Rondo and his game and some fans and members of the media haven’t been too keen to Jeff’s analysis. Is it warranted? Jeff appeared on Celtics Beat last December and his recent comments have only reinforced what he said on CLNS a few months ago. Jeff will have the floor to talk Rondo, Marcus Smart, Evan Turner, and what other rumors he’s been hearing regarding the Boston Celtics.
So tune into yet another edition of Celtics Beat this Saturday July 26th at 2 PM ET/11 AM PT exclusively on CLNS Radio.
