    Discover Janesville: In defense of pipelines | Upcoming veterans' fair

    Are pipelines always bad?  Jim O'Brien is a Business Agent with Steamfitters Local 601 and he called in to talk about the importance of pipelines to our national defense, quality of work done by his people, and the general need for pipelines for the forseeable future.  According to Jim, he has not seen a pipeline he didn't like.  


    Free Veterans Fair!  Carissa Johnson, the outreach specialist for the IT program at Blackhawk Technical College stopped in to talk about new funding for veterans programs, which is triggering a whole new slew of services for veterans.  The fair will be taking place at BTC on February 9th 2 til 6 pm.

    Discover Janesville with Yuri Rashkin

    In 2011 Lexie Seaver was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, given 6 months to live and told she would not live to see her 26th birthday.  Recently, following an aggressive set of treatments and surgeries, Lexie was once again given just a  few months to live.  Lexie has just celebrated her 30th birthday.  Then, two weeks ago, her dad John Seaver was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.  Through all of this and now seizures, Lexie continues to write about her experience and communicate with many friends on Facebook who provide her with a constant stream of encouragement, which she appreciates.  Yuri spoke with Lexie as she was waiting to be with her dad during his chemo treatment.  Learn the inspiring story of this amazing woman, and how she continues her daily battle for survival.  


    This past Saturday, Janesville Community Radio was recording at ArtsFest@Janesville's Irish Fest.  Tune in as Yuri is joined by Esther Turner and then Bob Keith, host of JCR's Dadio's Lunch Bucket for a conversation about all things Irish, art and a round of "Where Would You Hang That Sign?"  


    Discover Janesville's final guest on this show was State Representative Amy Loudenbeck (R) who represents 31st State Assembly District.  Representative Loudenbeck shared her views on a wide range of issues including voter ID, redistricting, whether the state of Wisconsin should attempt to stop gay marriage recently reaffirmed by US Supreme Court, drug testing food stamp recepients, and much more.

    Discover Janesville: AFSCME Rep. "Dr. Schulte should be fired" | Update from RRP

    AFSCME Representative Dennis Hughes levels serious accusations of corruption and defamation at School District of Janesville, and calls for the firing of Superintendent Dr. Karen Schulte.  Mr. Hughes spoke about challenging the ballot status of two of the candidates in the Spring Elections for Janesville School Board, about being escorted out of the district office by police, as well as about his reasons and strategy.

    Discover Janesville: Dance Scholarship | Frozen Otter | Postnuptial Agreement

    Callie Schouten is a Janesville native who lives and works as a professional dancer in Las Vegas, NV.  Together with her husband, Callie decided to start a Schouten Famiy Scholarship, recognizing outstanding dancers in Rock County.

    The Frozen Otter Trek is a 64 mile hike through snow and ice, while exposed to the bitter January temperatures of Wisconsin. 


    This year Housing4OurVets Frozen Otter team includes: Joel Galvan, Amy Krebs, Tyler Quade, and Nick Brockley.  These brave souls together with team supporter Marcia Galvan, stopped in to talk about what it takes to prepare, what made them want to run the race, and why it is important to support Housing4OurVets.

    Postnuptial Agreement is a play by Jim Lyke based on a story by Tony Huml and directed by Naomi Houser, telling the story of a man dying of cancer, looking to find a good mate for his soon-to-be widow, and a father-figure for his children.

    Discover Janesville: Beloit International Film Festival | Teach Jamaica Teachers

    Kristin Peterson is a Janesville native and a filmmaker.  While she is working on her own short film Dog*Walk, for the past 3 years, Kristin’s been closely involved with Beloit International Film Festival where she works as a programmer and other things.  We spoke about what Kristin learned from watching over 3,000 films, the importance of sound, and how we could get Angelina Jolie to work with small independent moviemakers.


    Amy Stevens is a professor of special education at UW-Whitewater.  Amy stopped in to talk about the work she does in Jamaica where she goes annually to help train local teachers, what she learned from her experience, how great the island nation’s needs are, and how little things from America, can make a huge difference in a one-room school house in Jamaica.

    Discover Janesville: South Pole Plumber | JWA | Fair @ the Mall| Supervisor Dowd

    A plumber from Janesville, Ryan Boggs, just returned from a year-long stint working at South Pole, where temperatures reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.  Ryan shared his memories and impressions as well as why he is happy to be back in Janesville.


    Jake Sailing is a man of many hats.  On this episode Jake spoke about promoting Janesville Wrestling Alliance and the challenge of finding a venue for this popular attraction, JATV and the exciting opportunities Jake sees there, and UpUrSleeve.com, a company making humorous t-shirts and other apparel.  Jake also spoke about his annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party held on December 23rd every year for over 15 years.  The party originated as a way for Jake to give back to the community.  This year's Ugly Sweater Christmas Party will be held at Black Bridge Bowl on December 23rd as always, starting at 7 pm.  Proceeds will go to benefit Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin and Janesville Community Radio!


    Becky Strupp called in to talk about the vendor fair coming up at Janesville Mall this weekend, and to share her thoughts on working in Colorado.


    Rock County Representative Jason Dowd stopped in to talk about the legislative successes that he together with other supervisors, have been able to spearhead, such as passing unanimously a resolution asking Wisconsin State DNR to request Enbridge Pipeline to do an environmental study of the impact its pipeline will have on Rock County, and the idea of examining the size and the general way that Rock County Board of Supervisor functions and operates.

    Discover Janesville: Christmas Carol Ballet by StageWorks Projects, Inc.

    Britton Gandy is a Janesville resident and one of the choreographers involved in staging an original production of "Christmas Carol Ballet" for StageWorks Projects, Inc., to be performed on Saturday, December 6 at Stoughton High School.  Britton was joined by Coleen Kehl, the Artistic Director and Mary-Carel Verden, a board member of StageWorks Projects, Inc.  These three women came to talk about the excitement of producing an original production, being part of the Victorian Holiday Weekend community celebration in Stoughton, and how "fusion pieces" show the future and full potential of theater by merging together different disciplines.

    Want to learn whether destination wedding should be the choice for you on your special day? Lisa Sheldon is Executive Director of Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Specialists Association and she stopped in to talk about the latest trends in designation weddings and honeymoons including as “baby moons” and “volunteer moons”.


    1963 Chevy Impala with 11 miles on it was sitting at a dealer’s lot in Nebraska until it was purchased recently by a collector. Bob Clapper of Fagan Automotive stopped in to talk about the celebration planned for October 20th and 21st and this unique vehicle will be brought to Janesville and put on display at Fagan Automotive show room.


    Senator Tim Cullen stopped in to share his outlook for passing a law requiring school buses statewide to have seat belts for their precious cargo. The Senator also shared his thoughts on the Irish Fest and explained why his father voted for Joe McCarthy in 1946 and in 1952.
