Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Lacy Crawford to Conversations LIVE to discuss her new book EARLY DECISION.
A delightful and salacious novel about the frightful world of high school, SATs, the college essay, and the Common Application—and how getting in is getting in the way of growing up
Anne Arlington is twenty-seven, single, and in demand: she is the independent "college whisperer" whose name is passed from parent to parent like a winning lottery ticket, the only tutor who can make a difference with the Ivy League.
Early Decision follows one application season and the five students Anne guides to their fates: Hunter, the athletic boy who never quite hits his potential, a kind, heavily defended kid who drives his mother mad; Sadie, an heiress who is perfectly controlled but at the expense of her own heart; William, whose intelligence permits him to dodge his father's cruel conservatism but can't solve the problem of loneliness; Alexis, a blazing overachiever whose midwestern parents have never heard of a tiger mom; and Cristina, who could write her ticket out of her enormous, failing high school, if only she knew how.
Meanwhile, Anne needs a little coaching herself, having learned that even the best college does not teach a person how to make a life.
In this engrossing, intelligent novel, Lacy Crawford delivers an explosive insider's guide to the secrets of college admissions at the highest levels. It's also a deft commentary on modern parenting and how the scramble for Harvard is shaping a generation. Told in part through the students' essays, this unique and witty book is so closely observed that it has been mistaken for a memoir or a how-to guide. A wise and deeply felt story, Early Decision reveals how getting in is getting in the way of growing up.
John Kenneth Holt (11 July 1947 – 19 October 2014) was a reggae singer and songwriter who first found fame as a member of The Paragons before establishing himself as a solo artist.Holt was born in Kingston in 1947. By the age of twelve, he was a regular entrant in talent contests run at Jamaican theatres by vere Johns He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for record producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with Alton Ellis. He achieved prominence in his home country as lead singer of The Paragans and they cut a succession of singles for Duke Reid at his Treasure Isle Studio and enjoyed a string ofhits, including "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and the Holt penned "The Tide is High" (later made famous by Blondie and also covered by Atomic Kitten). Lucy Taylor joins us to chat about her latest book "Fatal Journeys" and "A Respite for the Dead". She was born in Richmond, VA, and never really got the South out of her system, as evidenced by the flavor of Southern Gothic in many of her works. She’s published seven novels, including NAILED, SAVING SOULS, and LEFT TO DIE (under the pseudonym Taylor Kincaid), and over 100 short stories.
FATAL JOURNEYS is a collection of stories about travelers who venture into regions both macabre and seductive, on the planet and within the psyche. Featuring eleven stories, including the previously unpublished “Summerland”, “The High and Mighty and Me”, “Soul Eaters”, the novella “How Real Men Die” and an introduction by acclaimed horror author Jack Ketchum, who writes: “…there are places you really shouldn’t go. Places that are dangerous to the heart, mind, and body. And these are the journeys she’s taking you on here. Some very far away geographically. Some much closer to home.… To Iceland where a wandering spirit exacts sorrowful, endless vengeance. To the back roads of Mississippi on the Fourth of July in search of a child-killer…To Thailand to kill your best friend.… So many dangerous places to go.” Visit her website at: www.lucytaylor.us
And now the rest of the story. I was born in Pine Bluff, AK, raised in Monroe, LA and matured in San Francisco, CA. (Yes. I'm an old school hippie).
I'm also one of those fortunate people who has been able to combine my personal passion with professional work. As Director of Development for Diversity and Outreach at the University of California, San Francisco my responsibility was to help increase diversity in the fund raising profession.
I believe God has always had his hands on me and skillfully guided me through the trials and tribulations of life to get me where He wanted me to be, doing the work He has for me.
In the early 90's I developed an unbelievable thirst for the Word that I have to this day. I began taking classes, attending Christian conventions and workshops.
Rev. Frierson and I moved to Corinth, TX in April 2007 and joined Antioch Christian Fellowship in July 2007, and "are members in good standing" (I just like saying that). I currently serve with a variety of Ministries.
I am very active in the community. Volunteer, loves to travel recently visiting New Zealand & Australia. Later this year I will travel to Israel (where Jesus walked.
In summary, it is my prayer that I have an impact upon others that outlasts my lifespan on this earth. I want to leave a legacy based on biblical principles, a spiritual inheritance that will affect the lives of others for all eternity. Passing on to the next generations a legacy with eternal value is far more important to me than a temporal inheritance of money and property.
Advice Ladies: Whatever you do, do with integrity; whomever you serve, serve with caring; wherever you go, go as a leader; whenever you dream, dream with your all; and never, ever give up.
