In a groundbreaking new study - The Broken Compass: Parental Involvement with Children's Education, Dr. Angel Harris and Dr. Keith Robinson have discovered that parental involvement, at least the way it is currently envisioned, doesn't quite work the way we think it does to ensure students' academic success.
They will talk to us about their research, what it means for the future of parent engagement, what schools should focus on instead, and what parents can and should do to support their children.

Today's guests, Drs. Angel Harris and Keith Robinson will discuss their book "The Broken Compass: Parental Involvement with Children's Education." Many of their research findings turn our traditional beliefs about a child's school achievement and its relationship to parental involvement with school on its head.
Angel Harris is a Professor of Sociology at Duke University. His research interests include social inequality, policy, and education. My work focuses on the social psychological determinants of the racial achievement gap. Specifically, I examine the factors that contribute to differences in academic investment among African Americans, Latino/as, Asian Americans, and Whites. I also study the impact that adolescents' perceptions of opportunities for upward socio-economic mobility have for their academic investment, and the long-term effects of youths' occupational aspirations both within the United States and Europe.
Keith Robinson is An Assistant Professor of Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the determinants and implications of test score (achievement) inequality in K-12 education. Dr. Robinson's work highlights the extent to which family and school factors contribute to achievement inequality, and suggests ways to equalize these differences. Much can be learned by examining the various stages of K-12 education since the determinants of achievement disparities change as children progress through schooling.

Parents have more freedom in deciding the education of their children than they realize. Schools in which there is a great deal of parent support result in a stable learning environment and increase student success on both a personal and academic level!

"By the Klan's moral framework, all whites are categorically superior to all Blacks in every way; hence its fanatical commitment to maintaining a social, political, and economic power structure that reflects that belief. In fact, Jews, like all true-blue Southern whites, understood and believed that without an organized, deliberate campaign of terroristic violence, Blacks would quickly advance from downtrodden plantation laborer to independent commercial competitor, marketing their own labor and produce free from the management or agency of whites. The post-slavery rise of at least sixty all-Black towns attested to the Black desire for independence and self-development. Centuries of slavery had not crushed this yearning." The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4000 schools participating.
This week, we are so proud to have as our guest, National Teacher of the Year - Mr. Sean McComb. Mr. McComb is a 9-12th grade English teacher at Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. He is currently completing his eighth year as an educator and has been at Patapsco since beginning his teaching career.
“A strong teacher-student relationship facilitates the opportunity for deeper learning and more critical thinking,” says McComb. He firmly believes that public education is the foundation for opportunity and success for any child. In addition to his role as an English instructor, McComb helped develop, and continues to spearhead, Patapsco’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program which boasted a 98% college acceptance rate for its last two graduating classes.
McComb’s devotion to the teaching profession extends beyond the classroom as well. He also coaches the Patapsco Cross Country Team, supervises cultural exchange programs, and has led several university training sessions and presentations for future teachers. McComb says that he has found his purpose in teaching stating, “I have worked to engage my students and push them to achieve the excellence within them. Every child deserves nothing less, and my calling is to champion that effort.”
He holds a B.A. in English Literature and a Masters of Education in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a Certificate in School Improvement Leadership from Goucher College.
