The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, founded in 1971 and named after the extinct Xerces blue butterfly (Giaucopsyche xerces) is a nonprofit organization at the forefront of invertebrate protection worldwide, harnessing the knowledge of scientists and the enthusiasm of citizens to implement habitat conservation programs. Over the last fifteen years, the Society's Pollinator Conservation Program has protected at-risk bumble bees, successfully advocated for new conservation provisions in the Farm Bill, and trained thousands of farmers, gardeners, educators, and land managers to protect and manage pollinator habitat. Contributing authors include Xerces Society scientists Eric Mader, Matthew Shepherd, Mace Vaughan, and Scott Hoffman Black, as well as Gretchen LeBuhn, Associate Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University and director of the Great Sunflower Project, the world's largest citizen-science bee monitoring program.
