Sociopaths, they are everywhere (and not necessarily in jail). Tey are your teachers, CEO's, government officials, your neighbor next door-or even in your family. “They appear to function reasonably well—as lawyers, doctors, psychiatrists, academics, mercenaries, police officers, cult leaders, military personnel, businesspeople, writers, artists, entertainers and so forth—without breaking the law, or at least without being caught and convicted. These individuals are every bit as egocentric, callous and manipulative as the average criminal psychopath; however, their intelligence, family background, social skills and circumstances permit them to construct a façade of normalcy and to get what they want with relative impunity.”DR. Robert Hare. According to DSM-IV, a person can be diagnosed as antisocial if since age 15 he or she has shown a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others. The person must have indicated at least three of the following:
Failure to conform to lawful social norms
Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead
Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicted by repeated physical fights or assaults
Reckless disregard for safety of self or others
Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations
Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent about having hurt, mistreated or stolen from another

Recently I was asked to teach meditation to a group of underprivileged middle school kids in El Paso, Texas who are in the chess club.
The chess club team was going to the Texas State chess championship and they were intimidated by other chess teams. I taught them mindful meditation which helped them separate a given experience from an associated emotion which helped them to focus their awareness on the present moment.
Listen in to the techniques that can help to curb kids' impulsivity, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. The chess club ended up winning state and are headed to nationals!

Sex addicts and partners of sex addicts can have mental illnesses that complicate diagnosis and recovery. One of these mental illnesses is borderline personality disorder, or BPD. BPD is commonly associated with sex addiction and makes sex addiction much more difficult to diagnose and treat because the criteria for both diagnoses overlap. BPD is considered a severe personality disorder often caused by cumulative trauma experienced in early and middle childhood. Carol the Coach will interview Geoff Goodman who not only is a CSAT but a proffessor of psychology. He will be explaining some of the symptoms of BPD which include frantic attempts to avoid abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsivity, which can include self-injurious behaviors and sexual promiscuity. It is important that mental health professionals screen for BPD when they assess sex addicts and partners of sex addicts. BPD is extremely challenging to treat in psychotherapy because patients diagnosed with BPD often attempt to push away their therapists with hostile behaviors. Fortunately, there are several evidence-based treatment models for BPD that, when combined with a 12-step program for sex addiction or codependency, can help the patient to find a successful path of recovery.
