Domestic Violence in the NFL (Rice Reinstated) - What Message Did That Deliver?

    in Education

Domestic Violence in the NFL (Rice Reinstated) - What Kind Message Did That Decision Deliver?

The NFL was forced to reinstate running back Ray Rice by Judge Barbara Jones, making him eligible to return to the field after missing 11 games during the 2014 season, per multiple sources. The NFL has agreed not to pursue any further punishment for Rice. After the conclusion of an appeal hearing that featured testimony from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the league lifted its indefinite suspension, which it levied on Sept. 8, an increase of Rice's original two-game suspension.

Domestic violence: The Bureau of Justic Statistics (BJS) summary data bunches domestic crimes with their respective counterparts. Because the vast majority of these are assault cases the assault data was broken into domestic and nondomestic, based on another BJS report which states that approximately 21 percent of violent crimes are domestic. (How exactly that translates into arrests is very tricky; the tentative number closer to 15 percent, but to be conservative, 21 percent baseline for purposes of this analysis). The study did not say that all of the players arrested were guilty, and only a small number are ever prosecuted or disciplined (which is also true to varying degrees for the general public).

Let's discuss this case and what kind of impression the final decision gave other women that are being abused.

Thank you for your continued support.

    in Culture

Self Reliance:  There’s now no shortage of  ‘green options’ for us to choose from and we’ve been given the impression that as long as we behave in certain ways and buy the right products, we’re doing the best we can. This simply isn't true. And is in fact the slippery slope that leads right back into the system we are intent on escaping. The goal is to buy less. Use what you have. And apply pragmatism and common sense.

We reject it because of its inherent inequity, lack of thoughtful design, and it's inevitable self annihilation. The farm and it's residents have set out to redefine what resistance to the system looks like. No longer will we fight the battle for quality of life, for the survival of our species, in the streets of the urban dystopia. Whose streets? Goes the chant. Not mine. They can have them. Those streets are the capillaries and arteries of the machine. The machine that is steadily churning this world, our environment, our humanity, steadily down the conveyor belt towards the end.

No longer will we have our heads busted In by the lackeys and jack boot thugs of the barons. Pepper sprayed point-blank eye lids pried open by leather gautlets; hog tied and dragged down the street face bouncing on the concrete; ridiculed by the goose necking mindless minions watching their televisions and pointing their fingers. No longer will we be incarcerated for exercising our right to peaceful civil disobedience. Conveniently forgotten for an extra week or two in a putrid, dank cell, for a simple  misdemeanor. No longer will police thug batons meet their mark. Have the streets. They're yours. We will be in the field, in the workshop, in the development center, building something new. Something better. For I have finally learned, destruction and creation are mutually exclusive; they cannot be undertaken simultaneously. This is the totality of Revolution.

    Interview with The Stellas

    in Music

When The Stellas took their first trip to Nashville in 2008, they were still a relatively unknown husband-and-wife duo from the Toronto suburbs, armed with little more than two voices, one acoustic guitar, and a catalog of smart, catchy songs.

These days, The Stellas are songwriters who have written 90% of the material on their own albums, as well as songs for other artists. They’re parents of Lennon and Maisy, who star as Maddie & Daphne on ABC's "Nashville."

For Brad and MaryLynne Stella, the turning point occurred during a short trip to Nashville. While there, they talked their way into playing an impromptu show at the Commodore Grill, which led to a second show the following night. A publisher was in the audience that evening, and he liked what he heard. The Stellas were offered a deal on the spot. A year later, they were on the hit CMT show "Can You Duet?", moved to Nashville and signed a record deal with EMI Canada. They took home the CCMA trophy for "Duo of the Year" in 2013.

Back in America, one of The Stellas' biggest fans, Zac Brown, asked the duo to join his band for a series of sold-out shows. Brad and MaryLynne have also toured with Johnny Reid & Terri Clark.

"Back when we first started our career," Brad remembers, "we came across a lot of musicians who had a 'woe is me' story. They used to live in their car, or they had to wait tables for years before signing a record deal. We had that story, too, but we didn't view it as a negative thing, we thought of it more like camping! We wouldn't trade it for anything.”

"In some ways, we're making a first impression all over again," MaryLynne says of their new record. “This is the album we always wanted to make."
