MARTIN PRECHTEL - interview SHAMAN'S CRY TO THE HEART OF HUM
EARTH WISDOM RADIO Guest: MARTIN PRECHTEL - a Native-American spiritual healer, artist and teacher.
Prechtel grew up on a Pueblo reservation in New Mexico and eventually settled in a village in Guatemala. He became a village leader and was responsible for instructing the young people of Santiago Atitlan in the meanings of their ancient stories that were part of adult rites of passage. He eventually left the village in the face of a civil war.
Prechtel, whose books include the autobiographical “Secrets of the Talking Jaguar and Long Life,” “Honey in the Heart,” and his latest, “The Toe Bone and the Tooth,” has returned to New Mexico, but travels extensively, teaching. Through story, music, ritual and writing, he seeks to help people get in touch with their past to renew their cultural identity while living in the present.
A master of eloquence and innovative language, Martín Prechtel is a leading thinker, writer and teacher whose work, both written and oral, hopes to promote the subtlety, irony and pre-modern vitality hidden in any living language. His life, the well known subject of his previous books Secrets of the Talking Jaguar and Long Life, Honey in the Heart , took him from his native New Mexico upbringing as a half-blood, Native American from a Pueblo Indian reservation to the village of Santiago Atitlan where he eventually served the Tzutujil Mayan population as a full village member becoming a principal in the body of village leaders, responsible for instructing the young people in the meanings of their ancient stories that took place in the rituals of adult rights of passage.

"Taos Hum"
Tonight on Veridical Radio, Donna and Sherry will be discussing "The Taos Hum". The history of the Hum in the USA has been more difficult to trace. The first media reported case was of a Mr. Walter Deposki of Eugene Oregon in 1976, but around 1992 there was a noticeable increase publicity especially in the town on Taos New Mexico where it became known as the Taos Hum.
