Many of you are blessed to spend time with your spouse everyday. That is not the case when your married to someone who made the decision to join the military. My guess today, Mrs. Joy Vinzetta Hardin is going to share with us her experience of being a military wife.
Late one night in August 2013, Antwynette Houston pulled up at a local convenience store near her home in Louisville, Kentucky. She was approached by off-duty officer, Scott Sturgeon, who began to confront and harass her about the way she parked her car. According to the police report, Ms. Houston first parked in a handicap space without realizing it, and then moved her car to another space when Sturgeon told her to move. After Ms. Houston moved her car, Sturgeon was not satisfied because the car was allegedly crooked, and touching the painted line on one side of the parking space. He then became aggressive with her, accusing her of being drunk and demanding her ID. Frightened, Ms. Houston called 911 to request backup and told the off-duty officer that she was going to wait for them to arrive because she was afraid of him. Next, the unthinkable happened and was captured on a security camera. Oh, and by the way, Ms. Houston's son, who was 9 years old at the time, was in the car and witnessed the entire incident. Tune in to hear her frightening story.

Whether you like them or not, guns are probably the most significant devices ever produced during man's industrial era here on earth. In a merger of modern metallurgy and chemistry, firearms have been among the most extreme engineering achievements in the history of the human race. But along with the technical achievements represented by guns, there have also been the consequences and social responsibilities that have gone with them. More and bloodier wars have been using firearms, than all other weapons previously developed by mankind. And today, given the greater media exposure of gun violence to the general public, the right to own and possess firearms has become a matter of international controversy. In between these two realities, is a gun culture which truly enjoys and marels at the qualities and variety of firearms across the world. And as might be imagined, many people have their individual favorite guns.
But whatever your preferences, you're probably going to enjoy the subject of this week's Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on the Writestream Radio Network (@Writestream)). Marriage is hard enough for the everyday civilian. But imagine marriage when you are separated by thousands of miles—when one of you faces the dangers of combat and the other shoulders all the burden of home-front duties. As new research shows that long deployments increase the risk of divorce in military marriages (RAND Corporation, Sept. 2013) New York Times best-selling author Dr. Gary Chapman and co-author and former military wife Jocelyn Green have written a new book, The 5 Love Languages Military Edition: The Secret to Love that Lasts, that provides valuable tools for sustaining marriages in even the most challenging of circumstances. Based on Chapman’s popular The 5 Love Languages series of books, which have sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, the Military Edition has been adapted specifically for couples who face the unique challenges of marriage—from deployment to reintegration to constant re-location. The book provides tools to help couples identify, understand, and speak their spouse’s primary love language: quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch.
I used to be a little confused as to why some veterans took offense to people thanking them for their service then I read this article and it hit me like a ton of bricks. The article is titled “The biggest and most disruptive layoffs in America are coming from the military” written by Lydia DePillis in it we learn that “The Army has already discharged 80,000 troops. The next 40,000 will be harder, especially for the communities that depend on them. As troops poured into the Army base at Fort Drum, the rural area developed at a breakneck pace. With help from state tax breaks, developers built 3,800 units of brand-new housing and 600 hotel rooms. Troops depended on the local hospital system, which received $100 million in upgrades. The school system took on thousands more students. In an area where the last big industry — paper mills — had disappeared decades ago, the infusion of people and cash was welcome. Now, however, the citizens of Jefferson County are bracing for a collapse. In the next few weeks, the Army is expected to announce 40,000 troop cuts to comply with Congressional budget mandates, along with many thousands more pink slips for civilian support staff. At Fort Drum, estimates suggest that 16,000 of 19,000 could leave the base, as a worst-case outcome. Counting spouses and kids, about 40,000 people — a third of the county’s population — would vanish, unless they found other employment nearby. With permission from Congress, the Defense Department has gone through a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process five times since 1988, helping it more efficiently allocate forces after periods of rapid change.
