"Somewhere in Time" at Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel

    in Travel

What does great fudge, the world’s longest porch, U.S. presidents and Hollywood have in common?   Mackinac Island.

World Footprints will take you on a journey to a little known crown jewel that sits in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas –Mackinac Island (pronounced “Mack –in-aw”).   The island was named by Native Americans who said that the island resembled a turtle.   They gave it the name  "Mitchimakinak" meaning "big turtle".   The British later shortened the name to Mackinac.

Today’s show explores the island’s rich history and how that is being preserved as a National Historic Landmark.   Mackinac Island was key in two battles during the War of 1812 but in the late 19th century, it became a popular summer colony.  The island still maintains its old world charm and is known for its variety of architectural styles, including the famous Victorian-style Grand Hotel; fudge; and its ban on almost all motor vehicles.   (Golf carts are allowed but only on the golf course.)

Hollywood discovered the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and it was the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps (1946) and Somewhere in Time (1979).  Mackinac Island has been written about and visited by many influential writers including  Mark Twain and Henry David Thoreau.

As we'lll hear,  U.S. Presidents and politicians have enjoyed respites on Mackinac Island.  The Grand Hotel has honored these visits by designing some staterooms with the assistance of a few former First Ladies.&nb

Sunjai + Selena and Freaky Boiz MRTR

    in Pop Culture

Hosts: Jamel, Derrick Dwayne and Flash Gotti

#MyRealTalkRadio Interviews Dancing Dolls/Bring It! Stars: Sunjai & Selena and Alternative Rap Duo: Freaky Boiz

Sunjai Williams, also known as "Cool Flame," has been a dancer since the age of 5. Dancing is her passion, and she has been a part of the Dancing Dolls since 2012. Dancing runs in the family — she was inspired by her aunt at a young age, and her dad is one of her biggest fans.

Sunjai is an honors student who isn't afraid to speak her mind and act goofy. Just like her mom, Sunjai loves shopping, hanging out with friends, singing and, of course, dancing. She plans to go to college and become a pediatrician when she grows up because of her love for children.

Chicago natives Terrance ‘TtGotIt’ Wilson and Pierre ‘Prince Charming’ Phipps met and became best friends in high school, then went on to pursue degrees at Southern Illinois University. In 2010, after discovering a mutual love for hip-hop, they began posting videos of them free-styling over some of the hottest rap singles. “Girlz Be Gagging”, their interpretation of Nicki Minaj’s “Roman’s Revenge”, is a provocative, raunchy track filled with tales of sex and debauchery. While indie gay rap has been around for years, their music began to circulate over YouTube with over 2.1 million views. They have appeared on major radio stations such as The Breakfast Club (New York City) and WGCI (Chicago), magazine articles, and performed across the United States.

The Politics of Faith with Rodney Sadler

    in Politics Progressive

Host Dr. Rev. Rodney Sadler discusses Politics of Faith including progressive politics, American politics, culture, demographics, social justice, economic justice,  history, society, social change,  community action, community organization, and more!

Rev. Sadler is joined by Sam Wazan. Sam Wazan is the author of "The Last Moderate Muslim". Sam Wazan is a fifteen-year combat-zone survivor. He is an inspirational speaker, a grassroots catalyst for peace, and Global Trustee at United Religions Initiative. He is also a Senior Management Consultant helping multi-national organizations achieve breakthrough solutions and innovations.

Wazan has an authentic experience in the inhumane effects of conflicts. In his Key Note speech: Ending Religious Violence: The Journey to Peace, he reflects on his first year of war, when his best friend in fifth grade got killed. He grew up surrounded by remorseless sniper fire, indiscriminate rocket attacks, and vicious religious massacres. He escaped a kidnap attempt, lived under a ninety-day siege, and took shelter alternating between the stairways and a garage depot, depending on the intensity of battles.

In 2009, Wazan resigned from a prestigious corporate position. His searing drive to catalyze peace led him to write his personally inspired story and thrust him into public speaking.
Wazan is in high demand. He is a Key Note speaker at universities, corporations, and nonprofit organizations speaking on Limited Choices & High Stakes: Breaking through a Lesser Normal. He inspires audience members to embrace change, love life, and move from a continuous improvement frame of mind to achieving mental breakthroughs.
