“No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls” said the late Swedish Filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. It’s time for my annual tribute to the spirit of the Independent Filmmakers and the films they create. Often working with little or no budget, these intrepid writers, directors, and producers (often the same person) rely on their passion, patience, and perseverance to get their film completed. Indie films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals, and some are ultimately bound for glory and released to theaters. Michael L. Boylan of Pennant Films in Atlantic Highlands is the first Filmmaker in the series. He says, “I would always look around as a child and imagine what I was seeing was a movie. I would see two lovers speaking, a bird chirping, a man running and make it all into a movie in my head. Editing each shot with my brain until I could play it back in its entirety.” Michael’s latest short film is The Radio, about a timid boy who gets love advice from his recently deceased uncle through a vintage transistor radio. The Radio will be premiered May 8th at Atlantic Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands. Last year another of Michael’s films, The Baseball Card, was an Official Selection of the Garden State Film Festival. This is Part 1 of my Filmmaker Series. After the interview, please check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for more info.
