• Helen Weng: The Science of Compassion

    in Relationships

Compassion is a key motivator of altruistic behavior, but little is known about individuals’ capacity to cultivate compassion through training.

Now, through a recent scientific study, we've learned that it's possible to become a more compassionate person by training your brain.

Researchers from the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconson-Madison's Waisman Center found that engaging in compassion meditation -- where you practice feeling compassion for different groups of people, including yourself -- seemed to increase a sense of altruism.

"It's kind of like weight training," study researcher Helen Weng, a graduate student in clinical psychology at the university, said in a statement. "Using this systematic approach, we found that people can actually build up their compassion 'muscle' and respond to others' suffering with care and a desire to help."

Helen Weng is our guest this week on the Voice of Leadership, sharing more about this study and our ability to become more compassionate human beings.

Walking the Woods and the Water: In Patrick Leigh Fermor's footsteps from the Hook of Holland to the Golden Horn:

In 1933, the eighteen-year-old Patrick Leigh Fermor set out in a pair of hobnailed boots to chance and charm his way across Europe, "like a tramp, a pilgrim, or a wandering scholar." The books he later wrote about this walk, A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, and the posthumous The Broken Road are a half-remembered, half-reimagined journey through cultures now extinct, landscapes irrevocably altered by the traumas of the twentieth century.

Aged eighteen, Nick Hunt read A Time of Gifts and dreamed of following in Fermor's footsteps. In 2011 he began his own "great trudge"—on foot all the way to Istanbul. He walked across eight countries, following two major rivers and crossing three mountain ranges. With only Fermor's books to guide him, he trekked some 2,500 miles through Holland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

His aim? To have an old-fashioned adventure. To slow down and linger in a world where we pass by so much, so fast. To discover for himself what remained of hospitality, kindness to strangers, freedom, wildness, adventure, the mysterious, the unknown, the deeper currents of myth and story that still flow beneath Europe's surface.

The Legend Lives On: Tommy Hunt

    in Lifestyle

Pittsburgh-born vocalist Tommy Hunt's recording career began at age 20, when he cut singles with his first group, the Five Echoes, in 1953. It was five years later, however, that he made his greatest mark on popular music, rock & roll, and R&B, as a member of the Flamingos from 1958 through 1961. Those years coincided with the group's being signed to End Records, and the release of their biggest, most identifiable hit, "I Only Have Eyes for You" -- Hunt's dramatic background singing, coupled with the restrained piano backing, made it one of the transcendent documents of '50s R&B.  Hunt left the Flamingos in 1962 and signed as a solo artist with Florence Greenberg's Scepter Records in New York where he later released his first top 10 chart maker "Human".   Hunt has spent the past 40 years performing and making hits in England and performing throughout the European continent.

  • We the Anunnaki ~ 12/19/14 ~ Neil Freer, Robert, Helen

    in Education

Hosts Janet Kira Lessin & Dr.Sasha Lessin welcome back researcher/author Neil Freer to "We the Anunnaki".  We are joined by regulars Robert Evans, Jr., Helen (Nell) Parks from down under and Janet's brother, William R. Thompson, Jr. will possibly drop by and be a part of a roundtable discussion.

Our main focus is of course our favorite ancestors, the Anunnaki and in particular, Enki, Ninmah, Ningishzidda (Thoth), Enlil, Marduk, Inanna, Ereshkigal, Ninurta, Nannar, Anu, Antu and many other of our favorite characters in this ongoing, eternal, multi-generational, extremely dysfunctional passion play that spans over 450,000 years.

With "Moses" premiering in theaters nation-wide over the holiday season and this being the Christmas season, the celebration of the birth of Christ, we're going to focus on Jesus, Moses as well as the Exodus and address the questions, "Who were Jesus and Moses? Were they human or Anunnaki?  What evidence do we have?  We'll cover as much as we can this episode and continue the dialogue next week.

Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights Helen Hipp of WithinU Life Coaching

    in Self Help

Jericho, VT – It can be stressful having a child with special needs – it’s stressful to be a parent in general – but it can also be wonderful experience as well.

Helen Hipp is a psychotherapist and life coach and the founder of WithinU Life Coaching, where she works with adults with special needs and their families by opening their minds to abilities, capabilities and alternate possibilities.

“Their challenges are achievements waiting to be faced,” says Helen. “My belief is we all have special needs. My job is to give life to their thoughts with action steps that inspire. Many people view special needs from a perspective of hardship, but my son Raymond has taught me a lot through his courage and determination. It’s just a wonderful gift he’s given me.”

Helen’s son Raymond, now 29, was given the diagnosis of Asperger’s as a child. In 2013, Helen published A Different Kind of Safari, a children’s book about celebrating differences and encouraging one’s potential. A Different Kind of Safari puts into words the essence of Helen’s teachings and beliefs, epitomizing her goal to have a positive impact on someone else’s life by helping them find their own answers.

Helen and her family went on an African safari back in 2001. During the trip, they came upon a pod of hippopotamuses. Standing on the outside of the pod was a pink hippo that Raymond named “Rosie.” The tour guide explained that Rosie was standing on the outside because she was tolerated but not necessarily accepted by the pod because of her differences. Of course Raymond could understand that experience.

Says Helen: “It’s an empowering story. It’s got a wonderful, universal message that everyone can relate to and it’s fun, too!”

Saturday Afternoon with Carolyn: Eric Hunt on his newest film "Majdanek Myths"

    in Education

Carolyn Yeager talks with Eric Hunt, creator of the Holocaust Hoax Museum where you can go on a virtual tour of all the most important National-Socialist concentration/work/transit camps in Poland and learn "everything you ever wanted to know and then some" about the Holohoax.

Our topic will be Majdanek, an ordinary camp very close to the city of Lublin and the subject of Eric's latest film, The Majdanek Gas Chamber Myth, which he has made available to watch at his Holocaust Hoax Museum website ... for free!  Eric tells us all the latest information he has discovered and has put in the film, but that has not been updated at the "virtual tour" yet at the time of this show. One thing is sure, Majdanek was not a death camp.

Call-ins welcome in the 2nd hour at 323-642-1206.
