Join us for a show with New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) filmmakers Shonali Bose (Margarita, With a Straw) and Vibha Bakshi (Daughters of Mother India) and actor Kalki Koechlin.
The festival’s opening night film this year is Bose’s “Margarita, With a Straw.” The film is a poignant portrayal of a rebellious young woman with cerebral palsy, played by Kalki Koechlin, who leaves her home in India to study in New York, unexpectedly falls in love and embarks on an exhilarating journey of self-discovery.
Bakshi’s “Daughters of Mother India” is this year’s National Award winner for Best Film on Social Issues under the Non-Narrative category. The documentary focuses on the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi rape incident and India’s ban on the broadcast of the documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin.
The show will feature candid conversations around topics such as the prevalence of women filmmakers today and the role films can play in raising awareness for mental health and women’s safety issues in India.
Hosting the show is SAJA board member Divya Singaravelu.

When is the right time to take a chance? Who are the right people? What are the right conditions? Neither Darren nor Beth re...alized the musical potential they had when they first met in December 2012. It took several chance encounters -- passing vocal harmonies on a trip to the coast with friends, tentative instrumental work one cold winter evening, comments here and there on lyrics and melody -- before the spark hit. But when it did, it didn't take long for them to catch fire. After playing over 50 shows in less than two years, they are releasing their debut album, The Water's Edge, in April 2015. http://www.marchtomay.com
March to May formed in the Spring of 2013 as a collaboration between singer/songwriters Darren Guyaz and Beth Wesche. Overla...ying Celtic folk harp, guitar & keyboards with rich vocal harmonies, they sing deeply relatable stories of every day life and what it means to love, to live, and to reach beyond what seems possible. They sing from the heart, and carry the listener to a place within their own imagination, their own story.
A 2012 Nielsen study concluded that Black American buying power will reach 1 Trillion dollars by 2015. The BE piece tackled the data from the perspective of how marketers and advertisers have taken this group for granted, but maybe shouldn’t given all the money it has to spend. Many have argued that more businesses ought to be investing in emerging markets (those in predominantly minority communities, in business owned by minorities and those servicing minority communities).
Should Black America be proud of just making up "13% of the total population" yet spending at a rate of growth that outpaces the remaining population by 30 percent? The answer should be "NO!" It should be noted, the report’s data which shows that the Black American demographic is younger, more educated and have higher incomes than commonly believed, BUT what can be said about the fact that we aren’t retaining that wealth for the long term and at a rate sufficient to pass down wealth to subsequent generations?

Butterfly Evolution is turning the mic over to Amber Ivy and Jeremy Johnson/Blackout Media. Blackout Media reports...
According to the New Pittsburgh Courier and Free Press, there were some 18 black-owned stations in 2006, only 1.3% of all TV stations. In 2012 that number dropped to 5 and by 2013 it was zero due to buyouts by larger companies.
It is painful to see how our black brothers and sisters are portrayed on the news, television, and even movies. In 2015, directors continue to deal with systematic issues that cause black films with good storylines to not get funded because there is not a market for "good black films".
We have a trillion dollar buying power, so guess what WE are the market FOR? Join us as we discuss blacks in media and changing the narrative. We will also discuss the Black America 2.0 campaign to blackout media starting in May. Any media that continuously shows blacks in less than desirable light, we encourage you to stop watching. Yes to include, Hip Hop and Reality TV.

Scott Benner, is a stay-at-home dad, a husband, a storyteller, a type I diabetes advocate and an author. He loves his family, baseball and sitting in a dark movie theater with his wife Kelly and their children, Cole and Arden.
Scott has always loved to tell stories but he didn't begin to put the words he felt into written form until starting the blog 'Arden's Day' in August, 2007. Five years later he wrote his first book, "Life Is Short, Laundry Is Eternal'.
'Arden's Day' is a look at his daughter's life with type I diabetes from Scott's perspective. A raw, honest reflection of what life is like when you live everyday with a chronic illness.
We catch up with Scott after more than two years since we last spoke. You can tune in to that show here. We find out what he's been up to since, including his new podcast: Juicebox.
