We are talking about the new economic realities of healthcare in 2016 – and two recent pieces in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

How does Liberty Health Share and medical cost sharing keep costs so low?
Let’s get into these two recent stories in the media. The first one is from The New York Times. It explains a recent survey by the Kaiser Foundation that showed -- even people who are insured are facing crushing debt. 20% of the people under 65 -- with health insurance -- had trouble paying their medical bills. They have high deductibles to meet first before insurance kicks in – sometimes upwards of 10-thousand dollars. Then they have co-pays or caps on how much insurance can pay.
We’ve talked about this happening for more than a year now. Why is this happening?
What’s also fascinating in that study is only 53% -- with no insurance – were having problems. I say only because you would think 80 or 90% would think that way. Why is that and what does that tell you?
This cost trend is one reason Liberty Health Share has seen a 6-fold growth in 2015. Let’s get into the second recent article – this one from the Wall Street Journal.

There was so much controversy about passing “Obama-care”, officially known as The Affordable Care Act, but after all the dust has settled, there is no improvement in the health disparities between people of color in America and white Americans. Healthcare policies were written by those who were ill-equipped to address the issues that poor un-insured people face. Disparities occur in the quality of care received (Care by Provider) even when income, health insurance and access to care are taken into account. Patients from racial and ethnic minorities often fare far worse than their white counterparts on a range of health indicators: life expectancy, infant mortality, prevalence of chronic diseases and insurance coverage, among others. We also know our health is influenced by more than what happens in a health care setting. Our health is influenced by the conditions in which we live, where we work, where our children play (Care Needed due to Circumstances). Those social determinants of health play a significant role in contributing to health disparities.
A year ago I attend a Pri-Med conference in New York City which is a primary care (internal medicine) conference. There were all of the Northeast medical institutions represented with professors paid to teach the latest and greatest American Medical Association decision about “ standard of care” in the land. There were holographic presentations from prestigious university medical school. The case study was of a 62 year old black American woman with diabetes, obesity, hypertension and early signs of cardiac and renal pathology. The panel's general attitude was that the patient “did not want to change her health status”.

2016 is the year for big changes in HR. From creating more matrixed work environments to rethinking performance metrics and identifying and cultivating the next level of leadership, HR executives have a lot on their plate. We recently sat down with Adam Brinegar, a senior business and research leader for CEB’s Corporate Leadership Council to get his thoughts on the critical areas of focus for the year.
On top of the list of priorities for 2016, Brinegar outlines the importance of building a change-capable workforce. There are many questions that need to be asked in this area and evaluated. Looking at your environment and considering whether the workforce itself needs to be agile or if different management of the workforce will enable more agility and flexibility. How do leaders cultivate this change-capable workforce and then how this change gets communicated across the organization?
Another priority, according to Brinegar is rethinking high potentials and how organizations identify, cultivate and retain these employees. The Corporate Leadership Council is finding a shift in the trends in this area, as organizations are investing money in programs that identify and cultivate high potential employees, yet doesn’t necessarily focus on retention.
In this latest podcast on 2016 HR trends, Brinegar expresses his true excitement in the tools that CEB will be providing to members. “We’ll be able to provide our members with a playbook that will enable them to execute on some of these changes,” he tells us. And goes on to say that despite the many changes that will occur in 2016, the Council will provide the tools to help members navigate those changes and be more effective.
