Pharmaguy interviews digital consultant Len Starnes about the use of medical conference hashtags by the pharmaceutical industry.
The conversation covers these issues and questions:
What sparked this discussion about pharma's use of medical society conference hashtags?
The authors of the analysis describe Twitter conference reporting as a 'backchannel', implying that it is somehow covert. Is it?
Do you agree with the analysis that pharma disproportionately influences HCPs on conference hashtags?
Do you support the authors of the analysis that all pharma tweets on conference hashtags constitute ‘detailing’?
Should medical societies try to control conference hashtag use - is it possible or desirable?
What exactly are the authors of the analysis proposing?
Is self-regulation a better option for the pharma industry?
The shooting deaths of Mike Brown (Ferguson, MO) and Eric Garner (Staten Island, NY) by police officers sparked protests and national debate and discussion as well as social media hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter #AllLivesMatter #JusticeForMikeBrown #JusticeForEricGarner. The big question now is what do we as a society do beyond the hashtags and media interest? How do we approach discussing the subject without being anti-police or continuing to perpetuate stereotypes? Call 619-638-8436 to join the discussion. This week's episode features music by Common featuring Vince Staples, Pastor Chris Harris and poetry by Prince EA.
Tonight Girltinilive Uncensored will explore the hashtags and lifestyles that folks "portray" as commendable, dignified or smart, but are truly hazardous and for some (not all) ineffective, unproductive and well .... dumb.

Much has been made this election cycle about the debates of party leaders that have become standard fare for television audiences. Love them or loathe them, they are hard to escape. Brian Mulroney telling John Turner that "You did have a choice, sir" became the template for a debate knockout blow in Canada. Even so, up until this year the "Consortium Debates" were seen as compulsory.
But the CPC campaign inner circle sought to break this mold. Based on the premise that the "leftist media" networks were holding too much control, outside facilitators were sought and encouraged. And they appeared. Rogers Media. Munk School of Global Affairs. Glode & Mail. Once again, political parties created a problem, came up with over 9000 solutions, and nobody is happier than before this began. Except for maybe the CPC.
Perhaps the networks weren't willing or capable of going the new direction that some seem to want. That direction is watching you watch the debates. Nothing is more precious to political parties in an election than "data". More accurately, "positive data". The question has always been is it accurate. Analytics is an ever expanding industry with methods from scientific to semantic. The accuracy of their data depends on the degree of science employed and the transparency of method and researchers.
Amy MacPherson has long been documenting and reporting on the penchant of watching social media by the CPC. Mass surveillance techniques that use a shotgun for a fly. Have you used the hashtags #cdnpoli, #elxn42, #macdebate ? Your opinion is labeling you, fairly or not, to the analytic industry that operates in the shadows. Methods, procedures and clients seem to be rather "secret". Amy tells us where we are headed, for better or worse.

Two officers lied to try to free a fellow officer after he killed a man sitting in his car. He was the same age as our cohost. RIP Samuel Dubose.
Don't underestimate the power of your hashtags, because Instagram certainly is NOT. Theyre censoring you, and you don't even know it. They came after Sandra Bland. The first amendment doesn't apply to social media...
The stories are becoming all too familiar - Oscar Grant, John Crawford III, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and many others whose names don't make national headlines. #BlackLivesMatter has become the cry of the African-American community as the lives of young Black men and women are taken at the hands of police while unarmed. Why are people of color stopped, searched, arrested, and killed in disproportionate numbers compared to their Caucasian counterparts? How can unarmed "suspects" such as John Crawford III or Oscar Grant get shot on site when people who commit heinous acts - such as James Eagan Holmes who killed 12 and injured 70 in a crowded movie theatre - are arrested and given every benefit of the doubt? Let's discuss it and find some real solutions beyond the hashtags. Because of the nature of this subject matter, parental discresion is advised for children under 13.
