Blues fans all over the world continue to discover the incredible sounds of Memphis Gold.  Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955, Memphis Gold, Chester Chandler was the thirteenth child of fourteen. His father also a musician introduced his son to the guitar at the tender age of 4. Having released four full length albums to date, he has shared the stage with such artists as Bernard Allison, David Banner, James Brown, R.L. Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Award-winning Guitarist, Tom Lagana!

    in Music

It has been several years since Tom Lagana and I have had the chance to talk.  Let's just say that he's a BUSY man. Here's why: Tom's a Jazz guitarist - but also well known for his master classes in Classical.  And he has performed with orchestras: he has played with the NSO, alongside Eric Idle of Monty Python.  And was with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra when John Waters celebrated his 30th anniversary of "Hair Spray."  He's also a composer and bandleader and he takes his teaching abilities very seriously.  Towson State University (where he received his Masters of Music) and the University of Maryland  are two wonderful institutions that are grateful to him.

So you see that it has been a TAD tricky to rope Tom into another interview!  The last time was when we were face-to-face in a radio station's studio.  And we were focusing on Tom's last CD - which is why we're catching up NOW - because he has a new one!  "Vol. 1"  is what this beautiful collecton is called, featuring the group with George Garzone.  With Bossa, Jazz favorites and originals.  Exceptional music by a seasoned and passionate artist who was mentored by the legendary Charlie Byrd.  So close a relationship was theirs that Charlie hand-picked Tom to play at his favorite watering hole (also legendary), The King of France Tavern.  That's where Tom & his Trio became fixtures.

There has been much that Tom has seen in his wonderfully satisfying career - early success came in the Walt Disney Jazz Band in Orlando, Florida.  He also won the Sidney Lieberman Competition, an award that is usually given to pianists.  Tom was the first guitarist to be honored.  "Just Jazz Guitar" featured his analysis of Pat Metheny's work, which thrilled Pat. Clay Benjamin began playing guitar at age 13 in a musical family, which brought him great support. He joined his first band, One Accord, at age 16, the youngest in a key group of experienced musicians. There he started doing live recording sessions while perfecting his onstage presence. Then in 1997, Benjamin became the touring lead guitarist for smooth jazz artist Paul Howards as well as the fusion jazz group Segue. He spent years opening up for legendary artists like Chuck Loeb, Four Play, The Rippingtons, James Brown, Kool and The Gang, Ray Charles, The Commodores and even The Yellow Jackets, the band from that fateful clear cassette tape.

Benjamin went on to play for the show band Diggin' before most recently having the opportunity to tour as the rhythm guitarist for Rev. Al Green. He has graced the stages of The Royal Albert Hall in London; The Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California; The Manchester Coliseum in Manchester, England; Red Rock Amphitheatre in Colorado; and the BB King Blues Club and Madison Square Garden in New York. His in-studio talent has been secured by gospel stars Uncle Reece and Tito T'Juan and featured on Troy Sneed's charted gospel hit “My Heart Says Yes” and Donald Hayes's album Reflections Vol. 2.

Benjamin is currently embarking on his first solo jazz instrumental project, wearing the hats of performer, writer and producer with equal grace and deftness. The project's first single “I Need You” was met with resounding approval when it debuted at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival early 2014. “I Need You”, as well as his 2011 album Intervention is available on iTunes, Amazon and most music web stores.

    "Up Close & Personal" with Guitarist/Producer/Composer " Nils "

    in Entertainment

It’s one thing for a world class musician to write a book with a great title like “How To Make
Your Guitar Talk,” but Nils has gone further--living, embracing and even transcending those
words he once penned since becoming an instrumental sensation in 2005 with “Pacific Coast
    The Munich born, Los Angeles
based guitarist’s breakthrough debut album on Baja/TSR Records was the most heavily played
track in the smooth jazz format over the past ten years with nearly 30,000 spins. The song was a
true phenomenon in its initial release, staying at #1 on the Radio & Records airplay chart for
more than 10 weeks on its way to being named the most played song in the U.S. and Canada for
the year since then the most played song of the decade .
Now Nils is back with a new release, Jazz Gems..Best of Nils, which will take us down memory lane and remind us as to why we love him and his extraordinary music.
He contributed as a musician and co-writer of “Keep Rollin’” on Benson’s 1998 album Standing
Together, and the guitar and vocal legend returned the favor by playing a duet with Nils on Nils’
1998 debut CD Blue Planet. He has also become a core part of many fans’ summer and fall
    festival experience.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with the Award-Winning Guitarist Rob Tardik!

    in Music

The pride of Toronto is about to visit us - and so many couldn't be happier!  Rob Tardik is an extraordinary guitarist - award-winning - and is in love with the idea of a global vision regarding Jazz.  He's also a profoundly respected teacher, both privately and at the prestigious Merriam School of Music.  As well, Rob is an inventor - of "The Music Stamp Series." These are teaching accessories for both musicians and instructors.  A fascinating man - and we haven't even touched on his composition skills!

Rob had been involved in music for over two decades.  Well-versed in both recording engineering and media arts, he has turned out acclaimed projects that feature his joyful and passionate music.  There have been multiple singles on "Billboard's" Top 10.  We've been thrilling to his latest CD, "Limitless", since last year.  Before that, "Without Words" (2006) and "The Right Time" (2009).  And we're never going to forget "Balance/Energy/Laughter/Love (B.E.L.L.)" because it sums up Rob's philosphy.  Which is "Let's all keep ringing this BELL loud and clear!"

The reason for Rob's visit on 10/28 is to celebrate the release of his new single from "Limitless" called "RobBop."  It's a cool breeze of a song, featuring the steaming sax of Walle Larsson - and we'll hear it.  As well as an astounding array of tunes that are specially chosen for this show :)

We hope to see you in The Chat Room on the last Tuesday in October!  Time is flying by this year - and we're in the throes of Autumn in many places on the planet.  How wonderful to feel Harvest Time - with it's rich colors, fresh wind, and the promise of a comfortable blanket to ward off the chill.  Hey - that sounds like Rob Tardik music!  Hah!  Join us on 10/28.

U-Nam returns with a brand new project, C'est Le Funk.  Brent Black from criticaljazz.com said about C'est Le Funk, "For the artists that walk the smoother side of the improvisational street, the groove has remained stagnant for over a decade. The differences between most artists can be measured with a sheet of paper. U/Nam's C'est Le Funk pushes the music forward and drops a groove bomb of flavor and lyrical flow that most artists are still struggling to find. These are old school vibes dusted off with a new cool funk full of attitude and a technical proficiency to match. While there is an obvious George Benson like influence, U/Nam channels this pioneering sound into his own unique presentation. Simply put, no other contemporary artist sounds like U/Nam!"
