The Green Bay Packers were one of the pre-season favorites to be playing in Super Bowl 50. Jordy Nelson was injured during a pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, that did not stop the Packers from jumping out ot 6-0 start going into their bye week. Even though they were not playing their best football, the optimism was high that the offense would start clicking. The next two weeks would be against the eventual Super Bowl participants. The Denver Broncos exposed a way to rattle the Packers and their defense dominated the Packers enroute to a 29-10 victory. The following week, in Carolina, the Packers dug a hole and a comeback feel short as they lost 37-29. The rest of the season was a bumpy up and down road. A hail mary in Detroit may have saved a playoff berth. The Packers lost to the Minnesota Vikings, in week 17, ending their string of four consecutive division titles.
Aaron Rodgers is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and had to get used to Tom Clements calling the plays early in the season. With Jordy Nelson done for the year, Rodgers had to find another go to guy. Early in the season James Jones was the target. As the season rolled on, no receiver stepped up and it looked like Rodgers lost confidence in his receivers. Rodgers finished below a 100 quarterback rating for the first time since time since 2008. That was his first year as a starter.
A good running game can help a passing game. The Packers had a hard time finding a consistent running game. Eddie Lacy surpassed 1,000 yards in his first two seasons. In 2015, Lacy carried the ball 59 times less than 2014 and finished with 758 yards and only three touchdowns. As Lacy struggled, James Starks had career highs in carries and yards. Starks fumbled four times which was one less than he had in his five previous seasons with the Packers.
