Healing Conversations with Mildred Lynn - Aging Well with Dr. Paula Creighton

    in Caregiving

Recently, I had the good fortune to sit down with DR PAULA CREIGHTON, MD, FRCPC in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Dr. Creighton, who specializes in the field of aging or Geriatrics, has a tremendous amount of information to share, on both a professional and personal level, that may alter (in a good way) the way you perceive the aging process.

Although aging is a natural part of the human life cycle, many of us shy away from accessing the expertise and support we need to ensure that our “golden years” (or our parent’s golden years) are fulfilling, healthy, balanced and rewarding.  These resources may include invaluable diagnostics, key medical advances, coordination of services, and meaningful community connection.

After talking with Dr. Creighton, I had two flashes of inspiration: First, “I want to learn more.” and second, “Wow, this would be fantastic information for our listeners.”  So, get ready for a empowering conversation about AGING WELL that flows straight from the spirit and into the heart. Thank you Dr. Creighton for doing this work!

ROUND TABLE with HiC Luttmers, Dr. Glenna Calder, Kathleen MacNeil and Mildred Lynn: This week's topic is "How do you know when it is time to let go?”

Join Mildred Lynn McDonald for a fascinating tour of the mind-body-spirit connection. Enjoy nourishing conversations, thought-provoking guests, compassionate guidance, practical tips, plus a generous sprinkling of East-coast humour and warmth! You’ll also love our Round Table discussions featuring HiC Luttmers, John Carosella, Mildred Lynn and special guests.

Airs the FIRST SUNDAY of the month @ 10:30am PST. For more information, please go to: healingconverationswithmildredlynn.com.

Can you eat off your tongue?? with Deb Grant

    in Health

Deb Grant owner of Oraspa talks with us today about the tongue and why it's important to keep it clean. The tongue harbors over 60% of the bacteria in your mouth, yet most people don't think twice about it. Listen in to learn how and why this strong muscle is so important.

    Arch Gerontol Geriatr. 2008 Sep-Oct;47(2):267-75. Epub 2007 Oct 25.

Tongue-coating as risk indicator for aspiration pneumonia in edentate elderly.

A total of 71 edentulous Japanese people aged 65 years or older living in nursing homes were enrolled in the study. The results demonstrate that tongue-coating is associated with number of viable salivary bacterial cells and development of aspiration pneumonia, suggesting that tongue-coating is a risk indicator of aspiration pneumonia in edentate subjects.

The Placebo Response in Psychiatric Disorders

    in Health

Todays speakers are Steven Roose, M.D. Director of Late Life Depression Research Clinic and Bret Rutherford, MD Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry

    1. Placebo response has many sources in clinical trials for psychiatric disorders, and we will describe each of these sources before moving on to discuss how they interact and combine to form the observed placebo response.

    2. Some, but not all, sources of placebo response have significant implications for the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders, and we will discuss these with future directions for research.

    3. Interesting similarities and differences in placebo response occur between psychiatric disorders, which can be informative about both the mechanisms of action of placebo response as well as the pathophysiology of the disorder in question
