One of the most versatile soprano vocalists in the DMV area, Geneva Renée generates energy and excitement everywhere she performs. Geneva Renée is an adult contemporary pop/soul vocalist with a brand new debut CD "Beautiful Wonder" produced by Dinky Bingham and is full of passionate music that celebrates the powerful emotion and potential of our dreams while empowering us to express our true feelings through song.
Dr. Melinda Stephens began as a chemistry professor at Geneva College and is now the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Geneva. She prerecorded today's discussion with John and Karla to talk about her journey into the study of chemistry, how she incorporates faith into her chemistry classes, her transition into higher education administration and what's new at Geneva as they face changes necessitated by changing admissions demographics and other 21st educational trends.
Our beautiful artist from Oxnard, California has joined us on the show before this - but THIS time, Geneva Renee has big news! A Blues Alley event - showcasing that warm and glorious voice - will be held soon.
You must certainly understand that this is a big deal from a small town on the West Coast. Coming to Washington D.C., a few years ago to attend Howard University, our guest must have known that it was going to take some work to achiveve success. There are so many wonderful artists in this region! Well, she not only has achieved some enviable success - but the attention on her is something special. So far, she has performed in front of director Spike Lee and two Presidents. She won the local NBC affiliate's competition for a VIP audition - for the wildly successful TV show, "The Voice." AND Geneva has shared the stage with dozens of performers - some are household names. Diana Ross and Vanessa Williams and Hugh Jackman. We could fill a PAGE with artists!
Our mezzo soprano has a project called "Beautiful Wonder" - and some of the songs on the album have come under close scrutiny for the BEST reasons. We'll talk about that and play a few tracks. And we'll learn how her inspirations: Kathleen Battle, Yolanda Adams, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston continue to propel her. Geneva wants to keep expanding her horizons and attracting the right kind of attention. Like, for example, Grammy consideration for a song that she wrote (it happened!).
Join us for a special show on 8/21 - just an hour, starting at two p.m. Eastern - we'll get the lowdown on what makes a California Girl tick. You'll be delighted by what you'll learn :)

We'll chat with some of the artists who are playing at a very special event on 4/25. This big show was originally scheduled for Valentine's Day, but the weather prevented us from making it happen. NOW, it's Spring - so we expect even more to attend. And we can certainly feel the excitement in the air!
The incredibly talented - and wildly versatile, Phillip "Doc" Martin, will join us at two p.m. on 4/15! If you have seen this young and handsome saxophonist ANYWHERE - in this region or beyond - you know how special he is. He is actually taking the time between patients (he's a dentist: hence DOC!) to speak to yours truly. So, we promise to make the time action-packed.
Following Doc is the the beautiful and gifted vocalist, Geneva Renee! Geneva visited us a few months ago - with fellow singers, Anita King and Mycah Chevalier. This was when we believed the show was still a go on 2/14. Geneva has a wonderful background - originally from California - and she has victories and stories to share!
Just added: Mycah Chevalier! One of our favorite guests is back to talk about the Sensational Spring event on the 25th! Mycah is one of our region's most explosive talents, getting huge buzz both here and across the pond. This may be one of the last times that we get to speak with her before she tours - her management has plans! She'll fill you in :)
AND - new music is scheduled! Expect to hear a track from the Bona Fide CD, as well as The Mars 4-Tet - and Cindy Bradley! We'll also have a track that was produced by Matthew Shell, our good friend, who always has a way of creating something magically HYBRID! The song is dedicated to his lovely wife - and it's a group collaboration. You'll hear it in the first hour of the show :)
Ready to embrace this new season in all its promising ways? Let's GO! See you in The Chat Room
Today's show features Major James LaBossiere, who--alongside his wife--was appointed as the Divisional Leader of the Salvation Army Northern New England Division beginning July 2011. He and his wife are responsible for all aspects of Salvation Army ministry and services in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
The LaBossieres have served as Salvation Army officers for 29 years in various capacities, including as Corps Officers (pastors) and Divisional Youth Leaders. With a bachelor's in Community Ministry and a master's in Organizational Leadership, both from Geneva College, Major James Labossiere truly embodies the transformative leadership mission of MSOL.
Tune in as he chats with your host, John Stanko, about his life of ministry and leadership through his work with The Salvation Army.
We needed to do something VERY special to celebrate three gifted ladies - friends - who plan to sing together - for the FIRST time. So, we thought...why not a "Hybrid Jazz Goddess Party?" After all, Venus is the Goddess of Love - and our guests are going to be performing on Valentine's Day! It makes perfect sense - and these three artists are perfect TOGETHER :)
Anita King, like Geneva Renee and Mycah Chevalier, is based in the greater Washington D.C. area. Visible on PBS ("An Evening with Quincy Jones", backing Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock and BeBe Winans); even MORE visible with Bruce Springsteen on Barack Obama's First Inauguration Day - and has shared the stage with James Ingram, Lyle Lovett, and the late Isaac Hayes. More than equal to this, Anita has given her time and talent to make us aware of The MusicianShip - a charity dear to her. We'll talk about that!
Geneva Renee is a California Girl, who made her way East to attend Howard University. With her multiple degrees and her soaring soprano, it didn't take her long to find an audience: she has performed for Presidents, international Jazz and Gospel stars, and in pivotal vocal competitions - one of which earned her a VIP audition for "The Voice." Her "Beautiful Wonder" CD has garnered much attention - and we'll hear a track or two from it.
Mycah Chevalier is no stranger to the show. With the many victories that she has shared - including a Grammy nod for her work with Brian Christopher on "In the Groove" - her featured performance in the play, "All The Man I Need" - and the success of the song, "Anticipation" (hear regularly on WHUR in D.C.) - there has been reason for regular visits! There's always something going on with our Creole Girl - but this shared experience on 2/14 will be amazing - join us for good news!

Jean Moon is an ordained minister who has ministered in churches, rescue missions, and prison; she has been part of a chaplaincy program for troubled teens, and has been a director of a home for battered and abused women. She currently is host of Afternoon Tea with Mama Jean radio program on Radio Ear Network and affiliated stations.

Mama Jean's hearts desire is to reach people with the love of God through His son Jesus. She loves to see lives changed, broken hearts healed, people walking in freedom rather than the bondage of bitterness, to see hope where there was once hopelessness, joy where there was once sorrow, and see an attitude of peace and gratitude where there was once despair
