Filmmakers Phil Falcone & John De Meo – Co Producers of "Joe’s War"

    in Radio

Next up on my Filmmakers Series is Phil Falcone and John De Meo, who co-produced and wrote the film Joe’s War. The movie also marks the directing debut of Falcone. Premiered at the Garden State Film Festival, Joe’s War is the compelling story of Joe Caruso, a young Marine who attempts to return to his previous life upon returning home from the War on Terror. Watch the trailer here. The movie vividly depicts the daily struggles of facing up to and dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the devastating effects on family and friends. Upon his return home, now former Marine Sergeant Caruso attempts to seamlessly fall back into his routine with the help of his family and friends, all the while coping with his life changing overseas battle. Joe continues on a downward spiral, and in an attempt to regain control of his life, he enlists the help of some new friends and the aid of a therapist played by Armand Assante. Joe's War presents a realistic view of life with PTSD, and the film has many scenes that are difficult to watch. PTSD isn’t exclusive to the military; individuals with other mental illnesses are at higher risk, and women are twice as likely to develop PTSD than men. Approx 55% of US military personnel returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan seek health care services from the VA. In 2013, the VA spent about $600 million for PSTD treatment. Even though veterans are only 7% of the population, they account for 20% of suicides. And this needs to stop now. After the interview, please check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for more info.

Stronger Together talks with Lamont Carey, Founder/CEO of Contact Visits

    in Christianity

"Before the Transition is the Transformation...Improving the lives of ex-offenders and at-risk youth"

Valerie and Rev. Ray talk with Mr. Lamont Carey, Founder and Executive Director of Contact Visits, a nonprofit organization assisting at-risk youth and ex-offenders.

Contact Visits was founded by Lamont Carey on June 7, 2001.  The vision to form this company was birthed while Lamont was serving his own multi-year prison term. When preparing for release, Mr. Carey took classes in business management and non-profit management, marketing, accounting, finance, and other business-related topics. Additionally, he was offered stress and anger management, decision- making, substance abuse prevention, life skills, and other courses related to preparing to re-enter society that he felt were not effective.

Mr. Carey’s first responsibility with Contact Visits was to develop more effective programs to address the needs and issues surrounding soon-to-be released felons, ex-convicts, and troubled youth. He is also responsible for the daily management of all operations, finding locations for all three facilities, hiring and managing staff, grant writing and fundraising, bookkeeping, contract management, public relations, interaction with federal and local government agencies as well as other non-profit service providers, budgeting, sourcing of training and educational personnel, creation of curriculum programs, and marketing.
