Join genealogist, Sharon Batiste Gillins for a discussion of Record Group 105 of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. She will share her experiences in locating records in this rich genealogical resource available at the National Archives.
The Freedmen's Bureau was established in the War Department by an act of Congress on March 3, 1865. The life of the Bureau was extended twice by acts of July 16, 1866 and July 6, 1868. The Bureau was responsible for the supervision and management of all matters relating to refugees and freedmen, and of lands abandoned or seized during the Civil War.

A life-long interest in her family's history led to an active involvement in researching African American family history over the past 25 years. While researching her own family, she developed an in interest in unique and under-utilized record systems and record groups. Some of her more recent work focuses on strategies researchers can use to analyze Louisiana’s Freedmen’s Bureau field office records for revealing, often personal information on freedmen ancestors.
Ms. Gillins is a member of the Galveston Historical Society, National Genealogical Society, and Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. A retired Associate Professor at Riverside City College, she frequently calls upon her career background as a college educator to present workshops or deliver courses at regional and national conferences and genealogical institutes. Sam Thurman, Cliff Stewart and Lisa Stewart of the Colorado exoneration firm A Just Cause, discuss what happens when the wheels of justice trample unbridled over the rights of innocent Americans.
Although the American system of justice is the most-respected worldwide, it is still a system designed, and operated, by humans, which means it's not perfect. Sam, Cliff, and Lisa will highlight ongoing struggles against "the system" to free wrongfully imprisoned people, and what happens when justice miscarries against an actually innocent person.
Our Special Guest for tonight's show is Arnie Alpert, New Hampshire Program Coordinator, who will be sharing information about our government's federal spending and privatization of prisons in the U.S.
A Just Cause is currently campaigning for "FreeTheIRP6," who's been wrongly imprisoned in Florence, CO for a crime they didn't commit. Read full story: www.freetheirp6.org.

“I am living proof of what a lot of people wouldn’t think of homelessness.” Damien Haussling
If anyone has any preconceived stereotypes of the homeless, make sure they meet Damien. He will dispel any stereotypes you have. He got an 800 on the math section of his SATs in high school. He double majored in both math and psychology in college and was even accepted to a PhD program for statistics.
One of the many reasons Damien’s speeches have been such a success for the Speakers’ Bureau is that his story couldn’t be further from the stereotypes that surround homelessness. He is living proof that homelessness can strike anyone at any given time.
Thus far, Damien has spoken at a public middle school, Catholic middle school, and the Night of Monologues event. He thought that the Night of Monologues was such a success that he hopes to repeat the event multiple times per year. He enjoys telling his story because he is able to meet new people, expel stereotypes, and sometimes receive financial reward for speaking. Damien is the current Speaker's Bureau Coordinator.
How to learn more by talking to and not at others. When I'm told something by a person I trust, I verify it. If that person is a minister, a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, a friend or a family member, I still take time to verify the information. It is never a waste of time to be sure. Actually the more research I do to verify information, the more intellect I gain. I suggest you do the same. So for those who never do any research about any subject matter, you are in not position to argue what is or is not correct. You actually should not be spreading information that you have not taken time to confirm. And verifying information should include using more than one source. It is easier than ever before to be informed. As in the words of Frederick Douglass, "If we are ignorant the intelligence of others will do but little for us". You can get lots of information here at the I Love Politics Show about politics, praise and productivity. Join me here for weekly call in-put shows and on Twitter.com/beesayspolitics 24/7 for some fun learning conversations. Todays' show is about a political figure, Frederick Douglass. Prepare, call in, talk to others!

America the Beautiful! White men have lost their place at the top of the hill. It's called social order. They think they lost it when slavery was abolished in 1863. That is not when they lost it. They actually begin to lose their place in the social order, when they waiting 18 months before notifying slaves in the southern states, namely Texas and Louisiana that salvery had been ended by order of the Federal government. As time progressed, white men did less and less, or should I say more and more to try to keep blacks as slaves. Instead of abiding by the new laws, they chose to create new laws to keep their desires legal. The Black Code Laws became part of American policing. The KKK carried out the Black Code Laws. The Freedmans Bureau established to assist slaves in transitioning into citizenship became nothing more than a sham. Peace was not to come between the races based on the pride of poorer white men. Politics was in complete control of legislating what would and could happen to blacks. Police were allowed to create as you go laws and administer judgement as they saw it should be. Prosperity was able to continue based on the desires of those with property ownership. Poverty began to spread even more as a tool for the wealthy to maintain ownership of former slaves. People began to segregate even more than had been during slavery. Power was once again seen in the wealth of the white men. Is there anything different today than in 1863 when slavery was abolished in America. If you have to wait for the approval of politicians, courts, and merchants to have social justics, judicial justice, and economic justice, than not much has change. The change must therefore come by way of we the people. We the working class people of American
