Did you know that the majority of Freedmen's Bureau records are now digitized and available online for free, as well as the records of other institutions that served newly-freed African Americans during Reconstruction? Angela Walton-Raji and Toni Carrier have built a new website called "Mapping the Freedmen's Bureau - An Interactive Research Guide" (www.mappingthefreedmensbureau.com) to assist researchers in locating and accessing records of the Freedmen's Bureau, Freedmen's hospitals, contraband camps and Freedman's Bank branches. Researchers can use the website's interactive map to learn which of these services were located near their area of research interest. If the records are online, the map provides a link to the records that tell the stories of newly-freed former slaves in the American south. The goal of this mapping project is to provide researchers, from the professional to the novice, a useful tool to more effectively tell the family story, the local history and the greater story of the nation during Reconstruction.
Angela Walton-Raji is an author, genealogist, guest lecturer and producer of the weekly African Roots Podcast and Toni Carrier is the Founder of LowcountryAfricana, a free website dedicated to African American genealogy and history in SC, GA and FL.

Gary Yarbrough has been in prison for 30 years. He was supposed to get mandatory release this November, 2014. However, they played a mind game with him and did not release him. They are holding Gary Yarbrough because of his beliefs, not for his crimes anymore. During his 30 years in the Bureau of Prisons, he has been mentally and physically abused. In 2005, he was handcuffed and shackled, so that the guards could beat him. It is time for them to let Gary Yarbrough come home. This episode will also cover how they are using Gary Yarbrough's situation to try and control our Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly.
I also wanted to add a little bit about the Order...they did not only try to get rid of government control...they tried to secure an existence for our people...without government control. Look at all the control our government has over us now.....they tried to stop this from happening
Join genealogist, Sharon Batiste Gillins for a discussion of Record Group 105 of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. She will share her experiences in locating records in this rich genealogical resource available at the National Archives.
The Freedmen's Bureau was established in the War Department by an act of Congress on March 3, 1865. The life of the Bureau was extended twice by acts of July 16, 1866 and July 6, 1868. The Bureau was responsible for the supervision and management of all matters relating to refugees and freedmen, and of lands abandoned or seized during the Civil War.
Sharon Batiste Gillins is a native of Galveston, Texas with paternal ancestral roots in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana and maternal roots in Fort Bend County, Texas. A life-long interest in her family's history led to an active involvement in researching African American family history over the past 25 years. While researching her own family, she developed an in interest in unique and under-utilized record systems and record groups. Some of her more recent work focuses on strategies researchers can use to analyze Louisiana’s Freedmen’s Bureau field office records for revealing, often personal information on freedmen ancestors.
Ms. Gillins is a member of the Galveston Historical Society, National Genealogical Society, and Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. A retired Associate Professor at Riverside City College, she frequently calls upon her career background as a college educator to present workshops or deliver courses at regional and national conferences and genealogical institutes. She is also a member of the adjunct faculty at Samford Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Birmingham.

James ‘Flaming Eagle’ Mooney is an American Native Black Seminole, and a bloodline descendant of Seminole Medicine Man and War Chief Osceola and his escaped African American slave wife. James is also the namesake and bloodline descendant of one James Mooney, Irish-Scottish son of Irish Catholic immigrants, and American born U.S. Citizen. James Mooney was employed as an Ethnologist at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. Here is an account of three men doing everything in their power to assist the indigenous peoples and their ancient ceremonies of North America to survive the onslaught of atrocities perpetrated by misguided United States government agencies for more than 200 years.
War Chief Osceola was an influential Seminole leader who fought the United States to a standstill in the Florida Everglades, during the second Seminole War, also known as the Florida War of 1835. James’s ancestral family fought the U.S. military in an attempt to stop the expulsion of our First Nations people from their ancestral homeland and bringing about the deliberate annihilation of our indigenous culture.
In 1918, James’s forefather James Mooney fought a war of words before Congress, successfully halting the passage of a Peyote law that was designed to make illegal the entire American Native way of life. Pointedly, the dominant Christian religious mainstream sought to end our earth-based ceremonies and healing and empowerment rites, supplanting these traditions with those imported from across the seas. Of late, this codified denial of our constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom was promoted and enforced by a federal agency known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). James’s great grandfather’s successful defense of our sacrament before Congress was a first step in a long journey to restore and maintain our ancient heritage.

Commissioners give an account of the Treaty proceedings. Number of Cherokee attendees was 918. Relate that they explained cession of territory from King of Great Britain in wake of Revolutionary War. Agents of North Carolina and Georgia protested the Treaty. Discuss the boundaries, the issue of white settlements on Cherokee lands and the matter of compensation to the Cherokees for that matter. Note that without the cooperation of North Carolina and Georgia, the treaty will be ineffectual. Spanish and French make great efforts to engross the trade of Indians. Provide gun men Indian populations as: Cherokees, 2000; Upper and Lower Creek, 5400; Chickasaw, 800; Choctaw, 6000. Women and children reckoned to be 4 times the number of gun men.
