Dr. Michael Wald, aka The Blood Detective, is the director of nutritional services at Integrated Medicine of Mount Kisco, located in Westchester New York. Dr. Wald earned the name Blood Detective for his reputation to find problems that are often missed by other doctors. We hear a lot about Genetically Modified foods, or Genetically Modified Organisms – GMOs. But what exactly are they, and why should we bother worrying about them?
We would like to review what GMOs are with our listening audience, about how they are changing our relationship to food, and what we can do to take control of the types of foods we eat.
First, let’s answer the question; ‘what are genetically-modified foods?’
When you hear someone use the term, “Frankenfoods”, there’s a good reason. Genetically-modified foods take genetic material from one organism and put it into another. This gives the organism – plant or animal – characteristics that it didn’t have before, which your body will not recognize and to that end, will create a disease state.

Back in January of this year, we did the "Living Well In 2012" series of shows and covered a bit about eating right and the dangers of consuming GMO's or genetically-modified organisms during the "Fantastic Foods" show. The time spent on GMO's was not nearly long enough, so I always knew we would return to this subject and spend the entire show discussing this extremely important topic. A topic that could very well save your life!
Please join us as we talk about what GMO's truly are, what research and tests have been done on them, what risks are involved in eating or drinking foods that have GMO ingredients in them and what foods to either avoid or be more cautious about purchasing that are primarily GMO products these days, especially when there is not proper labeling. We will also discuss what other countries think about GMO's and why they refuse to allow their citizens to consume these dangerous "Frankenfoods!"
Over the years, we've learned a lot about reading the labels on processed foods -- but what about whole foods that have been genetically engineered? Should we be concerned about produce that originated in a laboratory? Or the results of cross-pollination from a GMO crop into the food chain?
These are some of the questions that are posed to this week's special guest, dietitian Ashley Koff, author of the new book, Mom Energy, and one of the spokespeople for this month's Right2Know March. Ashley talks in-depth about the dangers of GMO foods and what to do about it with MOMocrats Cynematic and Jaelithe Judy (who also writes extensively about food and politics at Care2.com).

Are grocery prices about to skyrocket? They just might if the State of California gets it's way. This week we take a small break from the election and talk about California Prop 37-a move to make mandatory the identification of genetically modified ingredients on product packaging. It's a move that could have national implications and will most certainly increase the cost of groceries as food producers pass the cost of this legislation on to consumers. Is this the right thing to do or is it a solution looking for a problem?
