This week my guest is Alex Korb, PhD author of The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time. Alex first discussed his book, specifically how we can get stuck in the downward spiral, on my radio show on Tuesday April 28, 2015 (you can find it on the podcast archive page). He is returning for a second time to discuss how we can create an upward spiral.
About the book:
Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you into a vortex of sadness, fatigue, and apathy. In The Upward Spiral, neuroscientist Alex Korb demystifies the intricate brain processes that cause depression and offers a practical and effective approach to getting better. Based on the latest research in neuroscience, this book provides dozens of straightforward tips you can do every day to rewire your brain and create an upward spiral towards a happier, healthier life.
Whether you suffer from depression or just want a better understanding of the brain, this book offers an engaging and informative look at the neuroscience behind our emotions, thoughts, and actions. The truth is that there isn’t one big solution to depression, but there are numerous simple steps you can take to alter brain activity and chemistry. Some are as easy as relaxing certain muscles to reduce anxiety, or getting more sunlight to improve your mood. Small steps in the right direction can have profound effects—giving you the power to become your best self as you literally reshape your brain, one small change at a time.
About the author:
Alex Korb, PhD, has studied the brain for over a decade. He earned an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Brown University, and received his PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles. He wrote his dissertation on depression, and has published numerous scientific articles on depression.
Victor Andres Triay, PhD., is a novelist and historian. The Miami Herald referred to him as "a significant researcher of Cuban exile history." Born and raised in Miami to Cuban exile parents.
Victor's first book, Fleeing Castro: Operation Pedro Pan and the Cuban Children's Program, was published by the University Press of Florida in 1998. Fleeing Castro was the first book length historical work on the topic. Three years later he published, again with the University Press of Florida, Bay of Pigs: An Oral History of Brigade 2506, a historical account of the Bay of Pigs invasion told through the eyes of the exile invasion force. In 2005 he co-authored, with Teo Babun, The Cuban Revolution: Years of Promise, a photographic history of Fidel Castro's war against Fulgencio Batista, Castro's assumption of power, and his establishment of a Stalinist dictatorship in Cuba. Victor recently released his first major work of historical fiction, a series entitled The Unbroken Circle. Book I, The Struggle Begins, was released in July 2013. Book II, Freedom Betrayed, was released in January 2014. Book III, On Freedom's Shores, will be released in mid-2014
Victor is a resident of Middletown, Connecticut, where he lives with his wife, Emilia, and three children, Victor Andres, Jr., Gabriela Elena, and Francisco Xavier.
OLIVIA FRANCES is an old soul wrapped inside the effervescent free spirit of an 18-year-old girl. This talented singer-songwriter originally from Cincinnati, OH and now based in Nashville began her musical journey at a young age – her first performance was a duet with a friend during an elementary school talent show. Her pursuit of the spotlight was set in motion in 7th Grade when Olivia had her first solo at the school’s Winter Concert. It was a moment that remains vividly in her mind; as she stepped up to the microphone, away from the choir and sang her first solo, Olivia knew in that instant that being on stage was where she belonged.
She started studying music in earnest after that; with piano at age six and by the time she was 12, her love of guitar and songwriting came to the forefront. Olivia continues to hone her musical talents and took the step of moving to Nashville on her own after graduating high school. After joining the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) at age 12, her move to Nashville enabled Olivia to become more active and attend more NSAI events. Her days are spent perfecting her music, while at the same time learning as much as she can about the music business as an intern with a record label. The valuable experience and connections she makes have allowed Olivia to play at such well-respected venues as The Commodore Grille and The Bluebird.
All in all, this is only the beginning for the vivacious young girl who grew up in Cincinnati with no musical influence in her family. Olivia’s mother is a writer and her father runs their family business. Their love and support have shaped Olivia into the hard working, always curious young woman she is today. Olivia is planning an exciting new project in 2015 and continues to pursue her dreams while writing and making music in the Music City.
