Diane Tomaz of the Massachusetts Adoption Resources Exchange (MARE) talks about adoption and the needs of the children waiting in foster care.
Many of these children have special needs. Addy is a good example.
Addy is a 4-year-old Caucasian girl who continues to make tremendous progress in her growth and development. Addy has some developmental delays and a genetic condition called Micro-duplication syndrome, which can present as having Autism like symptoms and behavioral challenges. She will need to be formally re-evaluated in the future to determine if she still falls on the Autism spectrum due to the tremendous progress she has made.
Addy attends pre-school with the support of an Individualized Educational Plan. She is no longer in a self-contained classroom due to the gains she has made and she is now in an integrated preschool program. Addy’s speech has also increased and she continues to receive speech therapy at school to assist with her speech delays.
Legally freed for adoption, Addison will need a family that is prepared for her needs and the unknowns that come with it. A family that has parenting experience would be preferred.
Addison will need a family that is able to keep her in contact with her younger sister and grandmother with four to six visits a year. She also has an open adoption agreement with her birth mother for post-adoption visits.
Host Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. John DeGarmo is a leading expert in foster care and parenting.

How can we best support our children is an ongoing conversation. Each week we can highlight another aspect of the recruiting process that can bring you a little closer to reaching your goal. Sports is a part of little that we all learn from. Whether you are an athlete or not, sports has plenty to offer. We as parents of athletes, can use each lesson of the game as teaching tools to success.
Yasmin Mistry, director of Foster Care Film, makes her second guest hosting appearance on Ask a Foster Leader to discuss her new short film, "My Identity.
Things happen in families. Someone gets sick, someone dies, someone goes to jail, someone gets strung out on drugs. It happens, our siblings, our cousins, maybe even our close friends, for whatever reason, leave behind children to raise and we choose to step up to the plate. But our choice, rather through a sense of compassion, obligation, or guilt, may not always be our spouse's choice. What if the child is unruly, undisciplined, disobedient and disrespectful? How do we love and care for them anyway? What of their oresence disrupts our home? Should we expect our spouse to just continue to be patient and supportive? What happens if a child begins to negatively affect your marriage - and there is no other relative who is willing to step up? Would you put a child who is a blood relative in foster care? Should you, if they become too much to handle?
Generation after generation, our Black families have suffered through slavery, poverty, and drug addictions.
With that being said, there have been instances where Black children have been placed in the system under the umbrella of foster care and then sometimes adoption. What is the system like that has been taken from their family? Does it matter that their are cultural differences between what white people think and what Black people think is different such as the way you discipline your child? What is a CASA or Guardian Ad litem?
We will discuss this matter and discuss how we can be more involved in caring for our own.
