John Klemmer (born July 3, 1946) is an American saxophonist, composer, song writer and arranger.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began playing guitar at the age of 5 and alto saxophone at the age of 11. His other early interests included graphics and visual art, writing, dance, puppetry, painting, sculpting and poetry. He studied at schools that include The Art Institute of Chicago and began touring with various local midwest "ghost big bands" (Les Elgart, Woody Herman) as well as playing with small local jazz and rock groups. After switching to tenor saxophone in high school, Klemmer participated actively in the local Chicago jazz scene, playing with commercial small groups and big bands while leading his own groups in the Chicago area and touring.Klemmer had extensive studies in music, taking private lessons as a youth and in college in piano, conducting, harmony, theory, composition, arranging, clarinet, flute and classical and jazz saxophone. He studied saxophone and jazz improvisation with noted Chicago saxophonist and teacher Joe Daley. He attended the prestigious Interlochen's National Music Camp. The year he graduated from high school, Klemmer was signed by producer Esmond Edwards at Cadet/Chess Records, eventually recording five albums with Cadet/Chess, including his innovative hit album, Blowin Gold (co-produced by ex-Rolling Stones producer Marshall Chess). Since our beautiful and multiply talented guest was with us last time, MUCH has happened - all good! Ragan told us that she had a new project coming - and here it is! Released on July 8th, it's already being pushed to the top - Ragan has SO many fans who have waited for this :) And there's MORE news to share: just a month or so ago, Ragan won a prestigious award from "Black Women in Jazz & Fine Arts" - prod her to tell us about that - it won't take much, believe it. She is very proud of this - and understandably so!
If you aren't familiar with the background of this flutist/vocalist/composer/arranger, prepare to be impressed. Ragan was playing multiple instruments at the age of FIVE! But the piano, drums and violin didn't compare to the love she had for the flute. Classical studies were a natural transition for her - just as natural - immersing herself after her education (Cleveland Institute of Music, Harid Conservatory) in New York. But NOT classically ;) Ragan dove into Jazz, Funk and R & B - and did it ALL with flair!
She won the Capital Jazz Fest's coveted "New Artist Competition" - and released her debut album thereafter. With "Class Axe" in 2007 - then "Evolve" in 2012 - you can hear just that: EVOLUTON! Trusted and acclaimed producers and arrangers, Dennis Johnson and Bob Baldwin, assisted in conveying the "Raganometry" that's a trademark of everything she does. Like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, Ragan Whiteside is Poppin' Fresh, 24/7! One listen to the new "Quantum Drive" and you'll hear another LEVEL of that! Check out who was happy to come onboard for this endeavor: Bob Baldwin, of course - he was an EARLY believer in Ragan. Plus, Althea Rene, Frank McComb and Patrice Rushen!

Yes, I had to shout-out Vel Lewis regarding his multiple talents! Keyboardist, Organist (actually, a multi-instrumentalist), Composer, Arranger, Producer and Vocalist - guess I need not explain further ;)
Our versatile and unstoppable guest was born in The City of Brotherly Love - and it didn't take long in his professional life for other artists to demonstrate how MUCH they DID love Vel Lewis. While still VERY young, he was asked to join a televised Jazz program in Philadelphia. This led to studio work - and it paved the way for an association with Ira Tucker, Sr., lead singer with the Dixie Hummingbirds. Vel found himself on the Paul Simon song, "Love Me Like a Rock" and on Stevie Wonder's "Jesus Children of America."
Meanwhile, Vel was in a group that was growing in popularity - The Futures. They were signed to Philly International Records and performing alongside Grover Washington Jr., The O'Jays and The Supremes. The Futures had a name change, but that surely did not affect Vel's popularity - HE was now working with more A-list talent - household names.
Along the way, he found the time to compose music for "The Sopranos", "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "Mad About You" and more. And he was able to focus on his own music for the career that he wished to have for VEL LEWIS :) After all those years of making sure other artists sounded great when he added his personal touch, it was time to concentrate on what he could do as leader of the band. You'll see his discography when you visit Vel Lewis Dot Com. And you'll hear tracks from "Colors Of Soul" when Vel drops by on 7/8. Once you hear his music, you'll know that he made a "sound" decision! Please join us - we've got some surprises in store for you on this show ;)
