Ava Leigh Stewart is a prolific artist who specializes in creative development for film, television, and web. Stewart launched her film career after earning a film degree in London, England. She garnished attention after directing, producing, and writing an award winning short film called Keepers of the Gate in 2006. In 2011, she directed her feature debut film entitled, South of Southern. She has gone on to direct seven more feature films and countless other media projects. Stewart is currently working on the feature documentary entitled, Paradise Garden. She was one of the producers of the recently released feature documentary film, State of Control, which chronicles the humanitarian crisis in Tibet. Leigh founded the Southeastern Film Festival in 2013, second year in progress, we have over 1300 submissions from 44 countries. She believes in supporting independent film, so she offered a 30 day free entry period. In that time, she received over 40 films from countries that were under sanctions, like North Korea and Iran, where filmmakers don't have credit cards and can't enter festivals to promote their work. The first event this year took place in Dahlonega, Georgia and we screened 45 films from 24 countries over a long weekend, our next event will be in Nashville in November of 2015. Stewart is also an author whose work extends from poetry, to fiction and non-fiction novels, as well as screenwriting.
I was having a conversation with film analyst, Karen D. (The Movie Maven), and she mentioned flipping channels on her tv one night and catching the end of the first "Rocky" movie. As a result we've decided to have our "Focus Hollywood" segment be devoted to "Boxing In Film". Now boxing in movies didn't start with the Sylvester Stallone's film "Rocky" , but it does play a part in the vast history of boxing in cinema. So, our task is to introduce you to a few films you may not have heard of, and re-introduce you to some movies you may want to revisit again. Please take some time out to come and listen to our broadcast, and find your inner fighting spirit with "Boxing In Film".
in Self Help
The 13th Step the film is a new explosive Documentary that shines the light on the dark underbelly of a huge Institution, better known as the most often referred to Alcoholic treatment self help groups in America, for the last 50 years- Alcoholics Anonymous. But what really goes on in those meetings? Why are all drug courts forcing Citizens to attend this anreligious type self help pods. Unregulated, and sometimes very unsafe, The 13th Step tells all by a member who left after trying to make it safe and hitting the wall of "we don't tell our members how to act " and "what's your part in it" . Monica Richardson was a member for 36 years. Her work with Make AA Safer workshops began to uncover more then she ever imagined. But raped, child molestations and murder made her convinced a film must be made and her work as an activist will stop court coercion and Professional extortion will be ended. On this episode, we will interview Sherri VandenAkker and her sister, Krystyn White
Sherri is the creator of the film My Name Was Bette: The Life and Death of an Alcoholic. This stunning documentary offers a shocking yet moving look at women's alcoholism. The film chronicles the progression of the disease in Sherri and Krystyn's mother, Bette VandenAkker -- a nurse, wife, and mother -- who died in September, 2007. The film, which was also created by Josh WE Hays, employs interviews, family photographs, medical records and graphics, and court documents to provide a personal and detailed look at the physical, emotional, and mental toll of alcoholism. The film also also offers hope to those affected by the disease who seek to heal their pain and strained relationships.
On this show we will talk with Sherri and Krystyn about their personal journeys with their mother's alcoholism, as well as discuss what it was like to create the film. If you have ever loved someone who struggled with alcoholism, you understand the challenges of loving someone with this disease.
