Interview: Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary
ABOUT GENE BAUR Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production.
A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals.
Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2008, Gene’s book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, became a national bestseller. As a guest on The Martha Stewart Show’s first-ever “vegan show,” he inspired viewers to eat in alignment with their values of compassion. Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California.
Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University.Tags: animal rescue how to stop animal cruelty farm animal abuse what is factory farming animal cruelty cases

CBO Revises Deficit Down; Senate Comm Approves Farm Bill
Chapter 1: CBO Revises Budget Deficit Down $200 Billion
The Congressional Budget Office has revised its deficit forecast for this year by $200 billion, dropping its estimate to $642 billion. This puts the budget on track for its smallest deficit since 2008 when the economic crash reduced tax revenues and spurred stimulus spending. The CBO credited an increase in tax revenues along with a cash return from mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Additionally, they predict the deficit will continue to shrink to below 3 percent of the entire economy within the next two or three years, a point generally considered as economically sustainable. This has led some analysts to suggest high deficits are a thing of the past. We talk to Mark Rom, Professor at Government at Georgetown University.
Chapter 2: Judiciary Approves Farm Bill with $20 Billion in Cuts to Food Stamps
The Senate Agriculture Committee yesterday finally approved a five-year farm bill designed to cut spending through a combination of cuts in in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance along with decreases in farm subsidies. About $400 million of the $2.4 billion in proposed savings comes from cuts in SNAP – popularly known as food stamps – eliciting outcry from a number of Democratic Senators such as Kristen Gillibrand of New York. Much of the rest comes from cuts in direct payments to farmers, a controversial program that, critics say, end up costing the government more for food production than the production is worth. We talk to Bruce A. Babcock, Professor of Economics at Iowa State University.
