    in Television

The Venture Brothers cartoon on Adult Swim references everything from Hannah-Barbara to Marvel, Led Zeppelin to the Big Bopper, cult cinema and even Oscar Wilde. The show’s central theme is failure-- the reality of life after the promises and optimism of the 60s space age have faded. But also the positive value of failure as a way to learn and grow, of making unpleasant realities better, and ultimately whether you can learn to keep the joyfulness of youth without its illusions.

In this podcast episode Elana and Steve explore the series as pop culture history geeks, talking about the episodes, drawing out themes and references.

    Interview with John Berry

    in Country Music

John Berry has a new outlook, a new address and a new beginning. The singer-songwriter rose to stardom on the country charts of the 1990s with such mega hits as “Your Love Amazes Me,” “Standing on the Edge of Goodbye” and “She’s Taken a Shine.” His annual Christmas tours brighten the holidays for thousands, as does his electrifying rendition of “O Holy Night.”

During his star-making decade, John placed 20 singles on the county hit parade. He earned Gold and Platinum records. He was nominated for a Grammy Award, CMA Awards and ACM Awards. And thanks to the miracles of modern technology, he even sang a duet with the late, great Patsy Cline.

But when the hit records faded, John quietly left Nashville and headed back to his native Georgia. "The fall is hard. For a time it left me angry and disillusioned. I was fortunate because singing was all I had ever done and all I knew to do.  I buckled under and made it work. It was then that I became the President and Janitor of JB Music. I am proud to say I have survived and grown because of it. Now I wish I could go back and talk to my younger self. I enjoy myself and making music. I love what I do. I’m realistic about who I am. I’m hopeful and excited about the future. I refuse to go away, because I LOVE singing and always will. I have a bus and sound and lights, and I’m always all dressed up and ready to go.”

Tune in to hear John telling stories from his music career - as well as sharing past hits and brand new music! Visit John online at www.johnberry.com

    TWO GROUPS OF ADVENTISTS/EARLY WRITINGS

    in Christianity

TWO GROUPS OF ADVENTISTS AT FIRST ONLY A FEW WERE IDENTIFIED WITH THIS GROUP WHO WERE MOVING FORWARD IN ADVANCING LIGHT. BY THE YEAR 1846 THEY RECKONED THEIR NUMBERS AS ABOUT FIFTY. THE LARGER GROUP WHO TURNED FROM CONFIDENCE IN THE FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY IN 1844 NUMBERED APPROXIMATELY THIRTY THOUSAND. THEIR LEADERS CAME TOGETHER IN 1845 IN A CONFERENCE IN ALBANY, NEW YORK, APRIL Early Writings Of Ellen G. White 8 29 TO MAY 1, AT WHICH TIME THEY RESTUDIED THEIR POSITIONS. BY FORMAL ACTION THEY WENT ON RECORD AS WARNING AGAINST THOSE WHO CLAIM “SPECIAL ILLUMINATION,” THOSE WHO TEACH “JEWISH FABLES,” AND THOSE WHO ESTABLISH “NEW TESTS” (ADVENT HERALD, MAY 14, 1845). THUS THEY CLOSED THE DOOR TO LIGHT ON THE SABBATH AND THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY. THEY WERE CONFIDENT THAT PROPHECY HAD NOT BEEN FULFILLED IN 1844, AND SOME SET TIME FOR THE TERMINATION OF THE 2300-DAY PERIOD IN THE FUTURE. VARIOUS TIMES WERE SET, BUT ONE AFTER ANOTHER THEY PASSED BY. THESE PEOPLE, HELD TOGETHER BY THE COHESIVE ELEMENT OF THE ADVENT HOPE, AT FIRST ALIGNED THEMSELVES IN SEVERAL RATHER LOOSELY KNIT GROUPS WITH CONSIDERABLE VARIATION IN CERTAIN DOCTRINAL POSITIONS. SOME OF THESE GROUPS SOON FADED OUT. THE GROUP THAT SURVIVED BECAME THE ADVENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH. SUCH ARE IDENTIFIED IN THIS BOOK AS THE “FIRST DAY ADVENTISTS” OR “NOMINAL ADVENTISTS.” DAWN OF THE LIGHT ON

Kings and Priests: The Modern Christian Church Mythology

    in Religion

Pantheon and the Birth of Christian Mythology

Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades – These names once represented the most powerful and revered names in a Pantheon of innumerable Greek Gods and Goddesses. But with the arrival of the One True God the countless deities of the pagan world have all but disappeared, now relegated to the realm of myth and legend.  And while time has faded these legends, they have found a new and enduring home in the teaching of Christianity. In fact, many Christians of today would be alarmed to know just how many of the truths they accept as Biblical fact actually have “NO” basis in scripture. But if many of the Judeo Christian views of Heaven, Hell, life and death – even Good and Evil are based on the corrupt teachings of the pagan world - then how can we look to these teachings as a guide to salvation? Join us today for another installment of “From Darkness to Light” as we use the Biblical word of God and the teachings of our One True Lord Jesus Christ to cast down the Gods of Olympus Forever!

We air programs on Blog Talk Radio at the following times: Sun 2:00pm, Mon 8:00pm, Tue 8:00pm, Wed 7:00pm, Thur 8:00pm, Fri 7:00pm & Sat 9:00am.  All times are Eastern Standard Time.

SDG 223 Godly Medicine for the Holiday Blues

    in Spirituality

    Psalm 42:5–11

Let's face it, for as exciting as Christmas may be for many it's also a time of deep deep depression for many others and some call it the holiday blues.

Now the experts claim it's due to not planning properly, family conflicts, striving for perfection, lack of sleep and even grief.

In Psalm 42:5 David talking to himself asks. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me?” Now it’s obvious as we look at the rest of this Psalm that King David's in a state of despondency that we call depression.

And this isn't just feeling sad. We all feel sad at times and I’m not talking about being disturbed because we all get disturbed at times.

And we all have broken hearts, disappointments and faded dreams, those come to all of us, but that’s not a depression.

So David asked himself, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?”

Now there are 3 basic Biblical truths in this message so be sure to tune in because I pray they will help us all to deal with The Holiday Blues:

Statistics show that African-American children are in academic trouble, particularly Black boys. America is losing a whole generation of young scholars as a direct consequence of schools that do not nurture Black students, teachers and administrators who have low expectations of Black students' performances, and Black parents who do not know how to teach the skills necessary for academic excellence.Written in a conversational tone in easy-to-understand language, EXCELLENCE WITHOUT EXCUSE provides Black students with a skills-based approach to increasing their academic performances and bolstering their self-esteem and self-confidence by improving their academic performance.
