From threatening another government shutdown over women's health funding and talking smack about the Pope after a visit to our country to letting the Benghazi which hunt cat out of the bag and insulting fellow citizens while pandering for votes on the campaign trail, the current state of the republican party is a never ending source of entertainment, befuddlement, comic relief and often, fear for the future. Last week Congressman McCarthy, presumed successor to John Boehner's position as Speaker of the House, spoke the truth on Fox "News" and confirmed what we already knew about the Benghazi which hunt. Now, we have learned that tea party Congressman Jason Chaffetz will challenge Rep. McCarthy for Boehner's gavel. You may remember him from his starring role as liar who presented anti-choice propaganda as facts during the bogus Planned Parenthood hearing late last month. That should be fun to watch! We also have more than a dozen Republicans on the march right now, throwing red meat out to their rabbid base. Ted Cruz stated to a crowd in Kalamazoo, Michigan last week that it would be "crazy" for us to accept "Muslim, Syrians into our country." Of course, he was referring to the 10,000 refugees we are preparing to accept as they have had to flee their war torn country. Tune in to Eyes Wide Open for discussion on all this GOP madness and much more!
Tonight on Eyes Wide Open Rheana Piegols and Michael Handley dive back into politics and the Texas Democratic Party. We will be joined by James White. James is a Committeeman for Texas Senate District 8 in the Texas State Democratic Executive Committee, and he serves on the SDEC Rules Committee. The committee and full SDEC voted this month on 2016 convention rules for selecting presidential delegates to the National Convention and the new rules are markedly different from the rules in the past years. Michael Handley explains why these changes are important in the article below. James White will discuss these rule changes and much more tonight on Eyes Wide Open!

Tune in to Eyes Wide Open for a night of debunking some of the propaganda that just keeps spinning its way along the campaign trail heading into the GOP 2016 Primary! They continue to insist the historic deal to prevent a nuclear weapon capable Iran is somehow going to magically have the effect of helping Iran create a nuclear weapon, which is an outright lie! They lie about climate change. They lie about gun related crime rates. They lie about Medicare and their support for maintaining it. They all lie about their own records in the public and/or private sector. The fact that there are no negative consequences for their lies and the fact that they are able to turn their lies into what their base calls "reality" is evidence that their talking point driven messaging works! How can progressives effectively penetrate the echo-chamber of lies constructed by the right? Bernie Sanders is one non-GOP candidate who has managed to maintain focus and stay on point throughout. We will discuss the speech he gave at Liberty University and analyze his strategy, broad appeal and effectiveness in messaging. Join Michael Handley and Rheana Piegols for all of this and much more tonight on Eyes Wide Open!

On this episode of Eyes Wide Open we are joined by special guest and Texas Democratic Party Chair, Gilberto Hinojosa to discuss how the Texas Democratic Party is building and preparing for the 2016 election cycle and much more!
Tueday Night Topics: 5th Circuit Affirms Texas Voter ID Violates Voting Rights Act Section 2. A unanimous panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has issued an opinion which is a great (but not complete) victory for those challenging Texas’s strict voter id law. The court affirms that the law violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, but rejects the claim of discriminatory purpose and that the law constitutes a poll tax. The court remands for more findings on discriminatory purpose and for a decision on the remedy to the Section 2 violation.
Tx A.G. Paxton's legal woes, which include a felony indictment, a summons to appear before federal District Judge Garcia for contempt of court, and his refusal to issue birth certificates to babies born in Texas to immigrant mothers.
You didn't think Michael and Rheana would forget to bring up the Fox "News" GOP Primary "Debate" did you? Rest assured, there will be PLENTY of hard hitting analysis of this serious and substantive event! Ahhh, well, it was an event anyway!

This is a show where I can discuss my views on a various topics with teens and adults. .Sometimes there is disconnect and this show is aimed to help bridge the GAP!! To find a little humor in the things we all do and maybe understand each other a little better (maybe). My goal is to encourage, help support and help motivate people in all areas of life and I hope that we will learn and teach others we come in contact with.
Join Rheana Piegols, Michael Handley and our guest Robert Miklos for a full night of progressive politics tonight on Eyes Wide Open! Robert Miklos is a former Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 101 from 2009 to 2011 when Republicans redistricted his residence outside of HD101 in 2011. Robert ran in the 2012 election for his new 107 district, but lost because 107 was specifically gerrymandered to defeat him.
Our topics include: Why do progressives and democrats not vote, particularly for mid-terms? Are they not attract to (or put off by) the Democratic Party's messaging? Is the Democratic Party's issue focus too narrowly targeting "interest group" issues such as abortion, "black lives matter," immigration, LGBT rights, etc. rather than a wide focus which includes all of these issues in A way that unites us? Should the Democratic Party also add progressive-populist income/economic opportunity/equality issues to their platform? Is Bernie Sanders good or bad for attracting more people to vote Democratic in 2016?
