Treating depression and anxiety--can we get past the trial and error approach

    in Health

Patrick J. McGrath, M.D. Professor of Clinical Psychiatry

Sarah Fader, Founder & CEO, Stigma Fighters

Despite years of progress, the stigma of having a mood disorder like depression, or an anxiety disorder like panic disorder is still considerable.  People experience disbelief from family, co-workers, and friends that this is a medical problem rather than a matter of needing to exert willpower and fortitude.  Sarah Fader and her organization, Stigma Fighters are working hard to address this issue for people with these disorders and will discuss her advocacy work in this regard.  Even when a mood or anxiety disorder has been diagnosed and is being treated, unfortunately selection of the correct treatment is still a matter of trial and error, with the attendant delay and frustration.  Dr. Patrick McGrath is engaged in a pioneering study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, called EMBARC, which seeks to make the first steps toward a future where testing will help predict which treatment will be most effective.  Ms. Fader and Dr. McGrath will discuss these efforts to assist those having these disorders."

Contemplation: A Path to Being an Example

    in Spirituality

Being able to acknowledge the higher self and the ego—together—takes contemplation.  Tune in this week as Lisa Jones and I discuss how those awakened and contemplating are examples for us to mirror. Not much unlike a landmark or a beacon, the way to go is marked.  If devotion and spiritual authenticity is affirmed, the contemplation of it can have a transforming and awe-inspiring effect on those who witness it. This is a natural consequence of experiencing a spiritual truth. This show is about developing the skill of contemplation. We learn that concentration and trusting one’s inner compass enables us to apprehend the mysterious and divine laws of life. Often, this hidden spiritual power emanates from us, influencing others, without us being aware of how it happens. Two things hold true in contemplation: 1 – we can survey our inner lives and make certain our personal resources are intact; 2 – we can exert influence on any depletion and fix the cause.

    in Business

Here are some traits of people with an employee mentality:

    I work for a paycheck — period.
There’s no need to give more than I have to, because the company will take advantage of me.
The business is lucky to have me.
Somebody is mandated to take care of me.
I am entitled simply because I work here.
I only do what I am told to do.

Believe it or not, even some business owners have an employee mentality. When an employer does not sacrifice personal preference for the good of the business, that employer has an employee mentality. When an employer works a 32-hour week, takes vacations when due, takes little interest in continuing education, and actually jumps at the opportunity to close the office, that’s an employee mentality.

Employees typically take assignments and complete them without a thought as to how their personal efforts impact the success of the business. Employees also concentrate on the status que in the workplace. They don’t rock the boat, and they exert just enough effort and energy to get by.

Owners, on the other hand, enthusiastically give the extra effort and choose to do things to attract more business, clients, and profits. Owners see the big picture and know the work they do is making a meaningful contribution to the company’s advancement. Owners also concentrate on developing new, positive solutions to current operation. They think outside the box; they take risks and become problem-solvers.

Power is in the Pen, the Vote and in the Money

    in Politics Progressive

Power is in the pen. Power is in the vote. Power is in the money. Goals to achieve either one of these in abundance or any combination of these in abundance reaps rewards to the holders. Each day brings another opportunity to do the necessary things to be the change sorely needed in America. Politicians today feel undue respect toward leaders of other countries, yet have not problem calling the President of the United States a lie, to be heard by the ears of the world. Yet the same politicians can say boldly, this President is not respected by world leaders. Ignorant double talk is corroding the fabric of the America so many have died for. We have to have power to be heard. We have to unite our efforts to exert strength to make necessary changes. Create the power you can and use that power for the good of a better America. America is at her best, when good people participate in the power of the pen, the vote and or the money solution.

New Look at the Holocaust and its relevance today

    in History

Adolf Hitler, the most evil monster in the world, said, “Conscience is a Jewish invention; it is a blemish like circumcision” and “If one little Jewish boy survives without any Jewish education, with no synagogue and no Hebrew school, it [Judaism] is in his soul. Even if there had never been a synagogue or a Jewish school or an Old Testament, the Jewish spirit would still exist and exert its influence. It has been there from the beginning, and there is no Jew, not a single one, who does not personify it.” Even Hitler understood that the Jews had a special task, albeit one that he hated. But why is that relevant today?

To find the answers, listen to this enlightening and educating broadcast. For I believe that there has been a battle between the forces of G-dliness and the forces against G-dliness. There has been a battle between light and darkness that was referanced all the way back to Sefer Breishit [Book of Genesis] , the first book of the Torah shebeichtav [the written Torah] when it talked about the creation of light and darkness. And Hitler represented one of the worst of G-dlessness. How is it that Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jewish people, who were tasked by Hashem [G-d] to promote the light of G-d in the world? And you look at the Torah and the ideology of Nazism, both of which are complete opposities. Torah is good, sweet, and is eternal light. Nazism was pure evil. Nazism brought man to be the worst of animals. According to Torah, man [both Jewish and non-Jewish alike] was created Btzelem Elokim [in G-d's image]. Hashem tasked man with a moral code on how they are to behave. Yet Nazism says that humans are disposable. Nazism casted Aryans as the master race while Jews were at the bottom and were to be exterminated. And anyone  else the Nazis saw as "undesireable" [such as those with disibilites], the Nazis just murdered. Tune in and listen.

    Judy Morris: Feng Shui Expert

    in Spirituality

Judy Morris has worked as a Time-space feng shui professional and teacher for over 25 years and has clients throughout the United States, Caribbean, Canada and Europe. She is the first American certified to practice and teach Classical Chinese Feng Shui, and she is the first American designated as a Feng Shui Master through the Feng Shui Research Center founded by Master Joseph Yu.

She came to the feng shui profession from a successful 20+ year career as a management consultant, personal and business productivity coach. "My years as a consultant taught me to appreciate the impact our environments exert on our happiness, health, productivity and relationships," she recalls.

"I searched for a teacher who was grounded in this rich Chinese system. I was especially attracted to Toronto-based Master Yu because of his background is mathematics and physics," she recalls. "He is a scientist who set out to disprove Feng Shui and, in the process, became so convinced of its validity and power that he is recognized today as one of its most respected proponents." Master Yu is one of the top Classical Feng Shui Masters.

For years Judy searched for a Qi Gong master to assist her in having a deeper experience of the energies she works with in Feng Shui. Instead in 2004 she  met Dr. Barry A. Morguelan who is one of fewer than 10 who have successfully completed the training to help people connect to the underlying root energy and to teach others how to stay connected and use that connection successfully. Through the ongoing learning and employment of these practices under the expert supervision of Dr. Morguelan, she has been able to surpass the general expectations of her clients and students in the efficacy of the Feng Shui services she provides and teaches.
