    FSL55: Ethiopian Farming Project

    in Christianity

John Hillman met his future wife, Linda, while they were both serving in the Peace Corps in 1967. 47 years later, they returned to northern Ethiopia and are involved in a project to help family farms to increase their yields. Farmers in that part of the country have been using the same methods for 3,000 years, and can no longer grow enough to feed their families. John explains how you can help change that, and bring hope to thousands of Ethiopian families.

Joy Keys chats with Ethiopian American Singer Wayna

    in Music

Wayna (known by the real name Woyneab Miraf Wondwossen) is an Ethiopian-born American R&B singer.

It has been said that Grammy-nominated, Ethiopian-born, singer/songwriter, Wayna has a voice as pure as it is passionate. Stevie Wonder says "she's incredible." Essence Magazine says she is “one to watch," and Billboard Magazine calls her "a stand out on the indie front." With two Billboard chart-topping singles from her sophomore LP, Higher Ground, and a coveted Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance Category for her remake, “Lovin You (Music)" featuring Kokayi, Wayna's star is on the rise.

"The Expats" is the third and latest LP from this innovative artist and represents a new and daring departure from her previous work. The project is named after its Toronto-based backing band and production team hailing from various parts of the world -- Ethiopia to Japan, Isreal to India, Germany to Jamaica. Drawing from diverse musical influences, Wayna and the Expats create a unique blend of African and Reggae-inspired soul, fused with classic and alternative rock -- Sade and the Police meets Lauryn Hill and Radiohead. This new sound, which Wayna calls “world soul” was the result of a creative journey, jamming, writing and recording with “the Expats” in Toronto over the past 2 years.

The Expats is available on ITunes and Amazon now.

NYCC Approaches, Tuskegee Airmen Comix & BLM Debate @The Grindhouse, Sat 6pm

    in Politics Conservative

Teanastellen! (Hello in Amharic/Ethiopian) Pull up a chair (with your phone/tablet,etc) and check out the latest edition of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse podcast airing this Saturday at 6pm EST.  Join Dburt, Capt. Kirk and "the Uncanny" Daryll B. as they decipher this week Rubik's cube-like conundrums: as the New York Comic Con marches forward, not only are The Defenders (Netflix) scheduled to make an appearance but a teaser trailer for Jessica Jones hits the interwebs; Dburt really digs TNT's 60s crime drama, Public Morals; comic writer, Garth Ennis tackles the Tuskegee Airmen in an upcoming series entitled, Dreaming Eagles; photos of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, courtesy of the CW hit the net; the crew gives their thoughts about original programming coming to Apple as perhaps a competitor to Netflix and Amazon; perhaps in the vein of a Batman vs Superman crossover move, has the forthcoming King Kong: Skull Island film moved from Universal to Warner Bros to wrestle Godzilla? And lastly, our impressions of Zack Snyder's comments levied toward the Ant-Man film and the perceived seriousness of prospective WB/DC comic films.

For the second half, when we delve into more socio-political fare, the good folks at Podcast Juice stop by to engage in a fruitful debate about the efficacy of Black Lives Matter. Is it only about police misconduct claims or is it appropriate to include intraracial urban violence under the BLM banner? (Dburt say "yes" resoundingly); Retired tennis phenom, James Blake gets manhandled by the NYPD; Waxing on the Venus and Serena showing at US Open. And Dburt questions Donald Trump (again) on labeling fellow Republican presidential aspirant, Dr. Ben Carson an "OK doctor"  Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620.
