When Rhetoric Trumps Reality: Test-based Teacher Evaluations
Our guest on May 15 is Dr. Elaine Weiss, National Coordinator-Broader, Bolder Approach (BBA) to Education Campaign at the Economic Policy Institute. She is co-author of a ground-breaking report on the impact of test-based teacher evaluations in DC, NYC and Chicago.
Some of the Key Findings: - Test scores increased less, and achievement gaps grew more, in “reform” cities than in other urban districts. - Reported successes for targeted students evaporated upon closer examination. - Test-based accountability prompted churn that thinned the ranks of experienced teachers, but not necessarily bad teachers. - School closures did not send students to better schools or save school districts money. - Charter schools further disrupted the districts while providing mixed benefits, particularly for the highest-needs students. - Emphasis on the widely touted market-oriented reforms drew attention and resources from initiatives with greater promise. Elaine has been national coordinator of BBA since 2011. Her public policy background has focused on early childhood education, specifically on policy mechanisms to help low-in- come families and children escape poverty. In her role with BBA, Weiss has co- ordinated and led events at the Economic Policy Institute and on Capitol Hill, developed research and advocacy materials, launched a social media presence for BBA, and worked with numerous allied organizations to increase the vis- ibility of comprehensive strategies in education policy. Elaine has a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in public policy from the George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration. Ms. Bingham suggests teacher attrition rates are to a large extent attributed to the "Pressures teachers face from administrators and other members of the community due to an expectation that teachers are solely responsible for student success and failure." She also believes the pressure and mistreatment experienced by teachers has led to tragic outcomes and simply quitting is the least of the effects on the lives of educators.

Anger: Energy Block or Teacher?
Join our radio circle on Wednesday, the 24th of April for a show full of anger releasing. Where does anger come from? How do we communicate with this important emotion as an honorable teacher? What are some good ways to release anger?
Like any other emotion, anger also affects our bodies, our minds, our spirits and our other emotions, but where does it come from?
We heard about the term "Anger Management" and yet we do not need to manage or control the anger. In fact, trying to control anger makes it build until it releases in hurtful ways. Instead of trying to control our anger, how do we trust and surrender and be led by our hearts?
A lot of people look for logical explanations for their anger – this is simply mindful judgment. Instead of putting the energy to finding logical explanations, we are better served putting the same energy to connecting and communicating with it – from being blinded by a wall of anger to becoming aware of its teachings.
Elders speak of connecting with our anger, seeing where it is really coming from and allowing it to erupt like a volcano so we no longer own it. And it no longer owns us. How do we do this?
