EMT workers were attacked on the job after responding to a call for assistance. However, their employer is not providing
medical care or compensation. Something appears to be wrong here.
WHAT, if any, compensation should an EMT receive when a patient attacks them and injures them?
WHO should be paying the medical bills?
Where is Worker's Compensation on this issue?
Join us to hear the story first hand from the EMTs.
This week we are joined by Ellayne S. Ganzfried, M.S., CCC-SLP who is a speech-language pathologist and the Executive Director of the National Aphasia Association and long time subscriber to EMSSEO.com Avi Golden who will share his story about how aphasia has affected him.
Many health professionals have heard of aphasia but often don’t have a good understanding of the disorder and how to communicate with a person with aphasia. EMTs and other health professionals are in fact more likely to encounter a person with aphasia than someone with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Unfortunately, because few health professionals are specifically trained to deal with people with aphasia, they may mistake the aphasia for mental illness, mental retardation, or other conditions. Misunderstandings may arise and efforts to help people with aphasia may be useless – or dangerous. The goal of this epsisode is to provide comprehensive information about aphasia along with practical communicative and intervention strategies.

Last week we talked about EMS being a hobby. This week we steer the conversation a little bit and discuss the sharing of responsibilities.
EMTs doing ALS, firefighters doing EMS and now even law enforcement giving drugs that traditionally only advanced level EMS providers could give.
Do these types of skill set cross overs help EMS as a profession or do they further the perception that ANYONE can do our job at minimal cost.
Join us with your thoughts.

In Dec of 2011 20 year old baby Natalee died of blunt force truma to the head and chest injuries. Natalee lived with both parents, Kayla Lichtenfels and Clayton Mibroda. On the day of the incident, when EMTs arrived, Clayton was perfoming CPR on baby Natalee. Clayton was charged with first degree murder and later convicted of 3rd degree murder. What happened to baby Natalee on that December day of 2011? Did Clayton beat his child to death? Was Clayton covering for someone else? Join us this Wednesday as we will discuss this case with Vickie Fetterman, Clayton's mother and Natalee's grandmother.
As EMS providers we get a lot of training on many topics. Cardiac, pharmacology, IV skills, airway management etc.
But what about training on keeping us safe and preventing injuries. I mean beyond a handbook, OSHA video or a gentle, "Be safe out there".
Should EMS agencies offer their paramedics and EMTs real formal training on driving the ambulance, lifting patients and situational awareness?
Wouldn't training like this not only prevent injuries, but also save on the financial end in lost wages, ambulance repairs and insurance. Maybe even prevent the ending of an EMS career too early.
Join us for some thoughts on this and bring us how your agency trains or doesn't train you in safety.

Yesterday was Veterans Day. This show tonight is our tribute to those brave men and women who serve. Wild Bill's dad served in Korea, and my dad served in Vietnam. I have a sister, brothers, and a brother in law that served. Wild Bill served and his son served an extended tour in Iraq at the beginning of the conflict after 911. He then volunteered for a second tour. He suffers from PTSD and brain trauma from a mortar attack. We did a two part show where we had the family share the issues of a returning solder and the effect it has on family when they are damaged. Many come home changed. Other give the ultimate sacrifice and come home in a flag covered box. Tonight this tribute is also for law enforcement officers, fire fighters, EMTs, secret service and anyone who has dedicated their life to public service. For those in the life you know the pressures these jobs bring to the family. The comradeship between all of these people who stand in the gap for others is the same when you are up against the wall! The job has a task but to the men and women it is all about each other! We should all count our blessings that we still have men and women who are willing to stand in the gap for others! One last thought. We used to sing a song in church, "God's got an army!" In listening to this show tonight ask yourself this one question. How does your commitment to God compare to what you are hearing tonight? Are you really a committed solder for God? As we play our tribute song we ask that you take this time to pray a sincere prayer for those that serve.

A New Jersey Bill is suggesting licensure for EMT's and paramedics, creating standards of care that are enforced and having an EMS oversight entity at the state level. These are the key components of the Bill and many feel they are overdue. Is this just an attempt to remove volunteers from the system? Or can this be a system model that will help move EMS to the next level of professionalism nationwide? Join us for this episode, I have a feeling this will be a fast moving one.
