Life Lessons - Healing the Hurt and Overcoming Grief

    in Spirituality

We have all faced loss: the death of a friend, relative or pet; the end of a relationship; the loss of a job, dream, or limb. These losses provoke grief, an emotion that is part of a normal, healthy healing process. Restraining grief can be harmful; addressing it heals.

Many people misunderstand grief. They think crying or showing emotional pain is a sign of weakness. They try to deny grief, but feeling the pain helps the person to cope with the loss and return to normal ways of living.

Responses to grief involve all aspects of one’s life: emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and mental. Everyone experiences grief differently and to varying degrees.

On this episode of Healing Spirit and Beyond, Roxie and Carrie offer support and healing ideas based on their own experiences and the experiences of helping others during difficult times.   Some of the ideas they will share are creating rituals, or a memorial, as a special way to honor your loved one and remember the special relationship you had.  They will discuss creating or finding spiritual activities that are meaningful to you—such as praying, meditating, or going to church.  What guidance comes from spirits on the other side?

Respected author and psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross stated "there is not a typical response to loss, as there is no typical loss. Our grieving is as individual as our lives."

Take a deep breath, open your mind and join us for this very special show.

Christ doctrines/and the word of God

    in The Bible

Matthew 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Luke 1:35-39 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

    39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Hebrews 11:1-4 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

    1 Corinthians 15 [Full Chapter]
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; ...

4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN: IS THERE LIFE AFTER LIFE?

    in Lifestyle

THIS WEEK'S SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN DEVOTIONAL PONDERS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION IN OUR LIFE: IS THERE LIFE AFTER LIFE? WHILE IT HAS BEEN A QUESTION FOR THE AGES, IT TOOK ON SIGNIFICANT PROMINENCE IN MEDICAL RESEARCH IN THE 20TH CENTURY THANKS TO THE WORK OF DR. ELISABETH KUBLER-ROSS, A SWISS-AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIST WHO STUDIED DEATH EXPERIENCES IN GREAT DEPTH AND FOUND SOME FASCINATING INFORMATION.  AND LOOKING AT SOME OF HER EXAMPLES WHICH HAVE BEEN VALIDATED WITH EYEWITNESS EXPERIENCE AND TESTING THROUGH COMPARISON IN NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES BETWEEN THE PATIENT AND THOSE WITNESSING EVENTS, IT STILL REQUIRES AN OPEN MIND AND FAITH TO AGREE ON THE FINDINGS.  BUT THAT'S WHAT GOD WANTED, FOR WITHOUT FAITH THERE REALLY CAN'T BE BELIEF IN THE LOVE AND POWER OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS GRACE.  FURTHERMORE, SINCE WE HAVE FREE WILL TO CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT AND WHAT IS WRONG, OUR OWN INNER SELF, OUR HEART AND SOUL, IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE IN OUR FUTURE.

WE'LL TALK ABOUT DR. KUBLER-ROSS AND HER WORK AND HOW FAITH BOTH LED HER IN HER WORK AND LEADS US TO THE DECISIONS WE MAKE.  AND WE'LL ALSO DISCUSS ANOTHER QUESTION WHICH LEADS MANY OF US TO THE CONCLUSION THAT LIFE AFTER LIFE MUST BE REAL. DO WE REALLY THINK THAT THE LIFE WE KNOW ON THIS EARTH IS ALL THERE IS AND WHY WOULD IT END WITHOUT SOMETHING BETTER?  SURELY THERE IS SOMETHING BETTER AWAITING THAN A SINFUL, MORTAL WORLD WHERE MANKIND DOES SO MUCH HARM TO OTHERS AND THE PLACE WE CALL HOME.

MY ANSWER TO THE QUESTION IS THERE LIFE AFTER LIFE IS A RESOUNDING "YOU BETCHA' ", BUT EACH OF US IS FREE TO MAKE OUR OWN DECISION AND ACCORDINGLY FACE OUR OWN FATE.  JOIN US FOR DISCUSSION, A FEW SHORT SCRIPTURE READINGS, PRAYER AND GOOD CHRISTIAN MUSIC.  THE SHOW WILL BE AVAILABLE ON DEMAND LATE SATURDAY NIGHT.

In her blog post, "an out of line obituary," Dana talks about her obsession with purity advocate Elisabeth Elliott's books and the way they reinforced her emotional insecurities about her body and sexuality, while living under the scrutiny of heteronormative, conservative evangelical leadership.

Suicide of a Loved One: A Panel Discussion

    in Self Help

How were you and/or your relatives affected by the suicide of a loved one?

Note: To protect the identity of our guests, their names and pictures will NOT be used with the exception of Shawna.

The five stages of normal grief that were first proposed by Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross* in her 1969 book On Death and Dying are:

denial,  anger,  bargaining,  depression, and  acceptance.

They are a part of the framework that makes up our learning to live with the one we lost. They are tools to help us frame and identify what we may be feeling. But they are not stops on some linear timeline in grief. Not everyone goes through all of them or in a prescribed order. Our hope is that with these stages comes the knowledge of grief ‘s terrain, making us better equipped to cope with life and loss.

At times, people in grief will often report more stages. Just remember your grief is an unique as you are.

    * Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross earned a place as the best-loved and most-respected authority on the subjects of death and dying. Through her many books, and her years working with terminally ill children, AIDS patients, and the elderly,Dr. Kubler-Ross brought comfort and understanding to millions coping with their own deaths or the death of a loved one. Her books have been translated into 27 languages. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 78. Before her death, she and David Kessler completed work on their second collaboration, On Grief and Grieving.
