OK, so the 2011-2012 winter was really mild. No days and days of icy, slick roads. The area schools missed very few days and the sleds stayed in the garage. But even though it wasn't the warmest - or coldest winter on record, we are all still ready for Spring. Let's talk about events that are coming up in the next couple of weeks, how the flowers are blooming and how pretty everything when it's green again in Asheville.
In the year AD 312, Emperor Constantine had a vision, seeing the cross of Christ superimposed on the sun, with the words, “in hoc signo vinces” = "in this sign you shall conquer." He attributed a battle victory to this vision, and he became a strong champion of Christianity. The next year, he met with Emperor Licinius, the ruler of the eastern provinces, to sign the Edict of Milan giving equal rights to all religious groups within the Roman Empire. Constantine blended Christian and pagan traditions by combining two pagan rituals (Saturn the god of Agriculture and Mithras the Persian god of light). Constantine merged many of the traditions from these festivals with the Nativity story in the Bible and Christmas was born. From its beginning, Christmas was a holiday (or holy day), gifts were exchanged, families and friends gathered to feast, and a birth was celebrated; just like in the Roman and Persian festivities. The first mention of December 25 as the date of Jesus' birth is found in an early Roman calendar from A.D. 336.
Easter is is Chaldean (Babylonian) in origin - the name Astarte, one of the titles of Beltis, the queen of heaven. Astarte is the Greek name of the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar. The worship of Bel and Astarte was introduced very early into Britain, along with the Druids, "the priests of the groves," the high places where the pagans worshipped the idols of Baal.
The Easter Bunny, the oldest pagan symbol of fertility - Semiramis - has absolutely NOTHING to do with the resurrection of Christ, nor does the Sunrise service. Jesus was resurrected while it was still DARK. John 20:1 (KJV) The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

If you don't know Jesus as Your personal Savior,
Now is the time.
One Minute longer might be too late!!!
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS, IT'S ANCIENT ROOTS AND PRACTICES. DRESSED UP IN THE NAME OF 'CHRISTIANITY'
WHAT WOULD YOU DO? OR WHAT WOULDN'T YOU DO?
1) SOMEONE YOU KNOW OR DON'T KNOW HAS GIVEN YOU A GIFT AND SAID 'MERRY CHRISTMAS' OR 'HAPPY HOLIDAYS.' IF YOU ARE A TRUE SAINT, BORN AGAIN JUDEO-CHRISTIAN, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? WOULD YOU A) ACCEPT THE GIFT AND RETURN THE GREETING WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING ELSE. B) ACCEPT THE GIFT AND SAY, " THANKS," EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T BELIEVE OR CELEBRATE IN YOUR FESTIVITIES.C) SAY "NO THANKS" AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU WILL NOT ACCEPT THE GIFT, UNLESS GIVEN TO ME ON A DIFFERENT OCCASION.
2) YOU HAD BORROWED MONEY FROM A FRIEND OR RELATIVE CLOSE TO THIS WORLDLY SEASON. YOU TELL THEM YOU HAVE THE FUNDS TO PAY THEM BACK NOW AND WISH TO GIVE IT TO THEM. THE PERSON SAYS, "AH, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, JUST KEEP IT. FOR CHRISTMAS. DO YOU: A) ACCEPT THE OFFER AND SAY "THANKS" NOTHING ADDED TO IT. B) DO YOU SAY, I WILL ACCEPT THE OFFER, BUT NOT FOR CHRISTMAS AND KEEP THE MONEY. C) DO YOU SAY I WILL NOT KEEP THIS MONEY AND EXPLAIN WHY, STATING "UNLESS YOU GIVE IT TO ME FOR ANY OTHER REASON BESIDES BIRTHDAYS AND OTHER WORLDLY CELEBRATIONS."
WOULD YOU BE CONVICTED IF YOU DID THIS OR THAT? WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT MIXING THE CLEAN WITH THE UNCLEAN? OR EVEN SITTING AT THE SEAT WITH SINNERS? FIND OUT IF YOU ARE PARTICIPATING IN OCCULT WORSHIP, PAGAN FESTIVALS, WITCHCRAFT AND IDOLATRY.
FOR THIS REASON, ELOHIM WILL SEND UPON THEM A DELUDING INFLUENCESO THAT THEY WILL BELIEVE WHAT IS FALSE, IN ORDER THAT THEY ALL MAY BE JUDGED WHO DID NOT BELIEVE THE TRUTH, BUT TOOK PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

Meet author Stephen W. Hiemstra. I'll be interviewing him about his book, A Christian Guide to Spirituality: Foundations for Disciples
About the book:
A Christian Guide to Spirituality takes the form of 50 daily devotions. Each topic is treated with a scriptural reference, reflection, prayer, and questions for discussion. Occasionally, references are provided for further study. The first four chapters (Introduction, Apostle’s Creed, Lord’s Prayer, and Ten Commandments) cover 40 days making them suitable as a Lenten study. Ten additional days focus on the spiritual disciplines and a short conclusion. Fifty days of study allow an Easter study running through Pentecost.
About the author:
Author Stephen W. Hiemstra (MDiv, PhD) is a slave of Christ, husband, father, tentmaker, economist, and writer. He lives with Maryam, his wife of thirty years, in Centreville, VA and they have three grown children.
Stephen has been an active writer spanning both his career as an economist and a pastor. As an economist of 27 years in 5 federal agencies, he published numerous government studies, magazine articles, and book reviews. He has maintained a personal website since the 1990s and he has been active in social media. A Christian Guide to Spirituality is his first published book.
Stephen is currently a second career tentmaker dividing his time equally between Hispanic ministry and blogging under a theme of “online pastor”. As a hospital chaplain intern, he worked in the emergency department, a psychiatric unit, and an Alzheimer’s unit. He is an elder in Centreville Presbyterian Church.
