Driving with Selvi: Through the lens of filmmaker Elisa Paloschi

    in Culture

Gentle World Cafe host, Suparna Malhotra, talks with Elisa Paloschi, about her film.

Driving with Selvi is a documentary film that tells the story of a remarkable young woman who defies strict patriarchal traditions and escapes a child marriage to become South India’s first female taxi driver.

We first meet 18-year-old Selvi at a girls’ shelter in 2004 - timid, soft-spoken, a fresh runaway from a violent past and the victim of a life set against her.

Over the 10 years filmed, we see a remarkable transformation as Selvi finds her voice and refuses to surrender to societal expectations – learning to drive, starting her own taxi company and working on the front lines of reproductive health education.

Instead of adhering to the patriarchal codes that oppress and restrict women, Selvi’s bold determination defies and challenges them. Will she hold steadfast on her road to economic empowerment? Will she remarry? After being unwanted and abused by her own mother, will she be able to break the vicious cycle of devaluing girls so prevalent in her society?

This character-driven story highlights the challenges that the disempowered female population in India face. While the film offers a glimpse into a world of poverty, prejudice and desperate circumstances, it shatters stereotypes as Selvi redefines herself from victim to survivor.

Through Selvi’s eyes, the audience is taken on an intimate journey, and perhaps even a familiar one, of healing, overcoming obstacles, and fulfilling dreams. Throughout this journey, it is Selvi’s unwavering spirit that shines through. Her refusal to surrender offers inspiration, hope and the clear message that anything is possible.

Jana and Sheronde discuss the topic of distracted driving on this week's episode of Auto Estrogen Live!

Super Dave Show - Should there be a law against texting while driving?

    in Politics

Here we go, another law to control behavior.  Many cities have passed a law that you cant text while you drive.  Is that infringing on our liberties?  Is it a good law or bad one?  What about DUI checkpoints?  Do we keep passing laws to be safer?  Republicans seem to be behind many of these so what are your thoughts?

  • Gifts of Success for 2015 - Goal Setting Made Easy

    in Lifestyle

So many of us lack focus... Let me rephrase that… many of us lack goal setting.  When we are planning a trip the first thing we do is figure out the driving time and consult a map.  If we are flying we immediately go online and start the pricing game. We general plan who and what we are going to see… what we are going to do… where we going to go… and how we are going to get it all done…. That’s the nature of the beast. I often ask myself, why is it so easy to plan a trip but so hard to your life.  It’s not hard, life happens to us every day which make it a bit difficult to plan but it’s not hard.

As the owner of Enhance U Image and Success Coaching, I mentor and coach individuals and small groups on goal setting and visualizing.  I help them create vision boards and goal posters. A goal poster deal with six major areas. Health, Education, Business, Personal, Finance and Spiritual.  A vision board is as stated, it has all the things you visualize for your life…..ie… the type car you want to drive, the house you want to live in your new business name, the income you would like to make and so on.

Here on Curves In 3D Radio we are going to talk about having a successful 2015 through Goal Setting… you can call in and share one of your goals for 2015 and we will have one of the host to call and hold you accountable… that’s RIGHT you will have an accountability partner in the Hosts of Curves In 3D Radio.

O YE DRYBONES MERRI X MAS SHOW !!!!!/2555

    in Current Events

It doesn’t take much of an internet search to discover the “fact” that the Goddess Isis bore the Holy Child Horus on December 25th. Frequently, the statement is used to dismiss the Christian tradition of the birth of the Christ on that day (and by inference, Christian tradition in general) as “mere Pagan superstition.” Frankly, this has been driving me a little crazy for years—for a variety of reasons.

The Holy Mother & Her Holy Child

First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the bringer of the light of Christianity to its believers, at that time of year when the light of the sun begins its return to the world. It is the perfect symbol and early Christians would have been silly to ignore it.Since Horus is a solar God, His birth at the winter solstice—even to the extent that He is “imperfect and prematurely born” at that time—makes symbolic sense. This tradition was still going strong by the 4th and 5th centuries CE, for another writer, Macrobius, famous for his book about the Saturnalia, notes that:at the winter solstice, the sun would seem to be a little child like that which the Egyptians bring forth from a shrine on the apponted day, since the day is then at its shortest and the god is accordingly shown as a tiny infant. (Macrobius, Saturnalia, 1.18:10

  • "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" "Art Killing Apathy" Founder Stands Up

    in Politics

As discussed in a feature article in SOMA depending who you speak with, she may be the front woman in a heavy rock band, a writer for several magazines and blogs or organizer of political rallies. Yet, one thing Eleanor Goldfield is not is apathetic. Having witnessed the social juxtapositions of growing up in both Sweden & North Carolina and inspired by her socially conscious parents to stand up for what you believe, Goldfield has an insatiable drive to use her voice to challenge political corruption and social inequalities. In 2010, with friend and fellow musician Brian Marshak, Goldfield formed the band Rooftop Revolutionaries as a way to express social and political messages against the sound of hard, driving rock music. "Art has the unique ability to connect with people on the deepest of levels without feeling like an intrusion. People open themselves up to this art, music, photography, and then – they think. React. Do Something." Please join us tonight. Long time Activist, Coffee Party Newsroom Editor and Radio Host, Bobby Rodrigo's new show on "I Take LIBERTY With My Coffee" on Coffee Party USA Radio every Tuesday at 8:30PM.   Advocating engagement and coalitions Bobby points out that the Constitution is the Rule of Law in our land and why it should remain so. Money in Politics, the Political Party Machine and partisan blind allegiance is on full display as he advocates against the erosion of our Constitutional Protections in the name of corruption and tyranny. "If we focused on following the Constitution we would solve many of the ills of our society.”  Offering a long list of guests from Political Organizations, Activism, Media and Artists Bobby invites you to join him every Tuesday at 8:30PM on Coffee Party USA Radio.
