'The Matt Duffin Show' - Embedded W/Aged & Disabled Troops

    in Health

I broke my hip.  Soon after, was enlisted into the Aged & Disabled Troops where was put right up on the Eastern Front - The Village.  Six week stay, then future 'away' rehab appears on the slate.  Can't walk anyway (AT ALL) and my now-skinny legs need to recover.  The 'mind game' of TBI Recovery as overtaken me, and my health is reported to be failing because of lack of Physical Training, er, Therapy.

First shared a small room with a Dementia patient - a former County Sheriff, with a side-kick sharing our bathroom.  No shower.  CNA's job.  Kinda like that part.  Then moved into a 'private' room area.  Less hustle, bustle, OWN shower/bathroom, social and activity's offered daily, the quiet of the neighborhood's overall 'issues' is enlightening is somewhat 'drab'.  Or, is it just me?  Being of around 30-years minus the average age of the 40-some-ish (no count yet) 'troopers' of various mental capacities, I've looked not only at the overall programs, work and ways of the facility (while trying to mend myself) but into the  eyes; perhaps the eyes of the future.

TBI Survivors and the dreaded 'isolation' that frustratingly follows, meet aged Survivors of life, where the hope of time is certainly limited.  Awareness, as a society we often overlook the factual concept of 'limited isolation'...

I'll do what I can from Rosebud Village tonight, hate to awaken the troops.  Brought my laptop, but need a 'techie' to stop by.  PLEASE.  Thanks to the night staff, I often use the closed rec hall's cpu at late night.  Yes, there is a routine!

HEALing THrough Hurt Welcomes creator of Hug Wraps Brenda Jones back!

    in Women

Welcome my good friend and creator of "Hug Wraps" back to HTH!

HTH welcomes Brenda Jones founder/designer of *HugWraps* these beautiful garments are alternatives to those unattractive hospital gowns made for cancer patients to wear during their various treatments. Brenda Jones felt as if her world had ended when she was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October 2008. Being forced to put on a drab, generic, embarrassing traditional hospital gown every time she went in for treatment only made the experience worse. So with a flash of inspiration — and a crash-course in sewing — she decided to do something about it. Much to her surprise, the kimono-style wrap she designed to give herself some dignity in the waiting room started garnering requests from other patients. Today? She's not only recovered, but she can hardly keep up with the demand for her homemade Hug Wraps from cancer patients all over the world Check out this dynamic ladies site: http://www.hugwraps.org/index.html

Weekend Thoughts on Cantor, Tea Party, VAT and Flat Tax

    in News

There are a lot of things happening on the domestic political and economic scene.  Eric Cantor loses.  A report shows that most companies are fudging on their books.  The Tea Party didn't use any corporate money.  Maybe we need a VAT or a flat tax or both.Granted there are other factors involved: one would be a smaller turn out; two would be canters bad campaign; and three would be Democrats and independents voting for drab. We don't know the full answer yet. But one thing is clear is that a group of people, voters, took things into their own hands. They are upset with establishment people controlling our country. This is a good sign. However it also shows how difficult it is to govern in the 21st-century. Moises Naim's book the end of power shows this beautifully. There are so many factions that are out there that have the ability to communicate through the Internet and other new media that there are a cacophony of ideas and bad ideas that are floating around out there. So finding a majority will be very difficult. However I think those tea party voters in Virginia got it right. Look at the most recent study that just came out today. It shows how so many corporations are avoiding taxes. A survey of most corporations not only here in United States but also internationally show that they all have losses on their accounting sheets. Why? they're hiding money and they're hiding profits. Why? They don't want to pay taxes. I have been advocating a value added tax and or a flat tax. Let's start paying into the government services that we need right away

Henna Hundal: An Advocate for Teen Fitness

    in Fitness

As a strong advocate for teen health/fitness/wellness, she has already channeled her passion into a variety of different avenues. She is part of a Community Health Education Team that travels to various counties’ fairs to speak to the public about the value of a healthy lifestyle. She has published 75+ primarily health/wellness/science articles for her column in a local newspaper, The Turlock Journal; in another local newspaper, The Modesto Bee; in letters to the editors of various publications; in the online version of Teen Ink Magazine, for which she won two Editor’s Choice Awards; in Contentment Health Magazine; in the Huffington Post; on Yahoo! Voices; and in SparkLife. She also won the UC Davis COSMOS Tina Rose Noto Award for her commitment to pediatric healthcare. Henna now has a “Health with Henna” segment on Express Yourself! Teen Radio, the #1 most listened-to program on the VoiceAmerica Kids Network. In her free time, she is a dedicated bicyclist, a yoga-lover, and a Zumba enthusiast.

All in all, she works to inspire young people to lead active, healthy lives, and tries to open up a meaningful conversation about the issues that often preclude them from achieving that today. The cardinal goal is to help individuals find empowerment through living and loving the healthy life. However, what differentiates her from other health/fitness/wellness advocates is that she approach the topic of health from a fun and exciting standpoint, as opposed to the drab and humdrum way it is so often portrayed.

The Authentic Woman - with Host Shannon Fisher and Special Guest Pat Bertram

    in Books

A Message from This Week's Special Guest:

Washington Irving wrote: “There is in every true woman’s heart a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity; but which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” As I read these words a decade ago, I could see her, a drab woman, defeated by life, dragging herself through her days in the normal world, but in an abnormal world of strife and danger, she would come alive and inspire others. And so Kate Cummings, the hero of my novel A Spark of Heavenly Fire was born.

"I am thrilled to be the first guest on Shannon Fisher’s new show, The Authentic Woman. It’s fitting that that this book is being highlighted because Shannon herself is a true woman who embodies the spark of heavenly fire the world so desperately needs." ~ author Pat Bertram
