Ms Leona Brady Watson, Legendary Cariso Master

    in Culture

TRIBUTE TO LEONA BRADY WATSON -- HON. VICTOR O. FRAZER (Extension of Remarks - August 1, 1996) [Page: E1424] --- HON. VICTOR O. FRAZER in the House of Representatives, Wednesday, July 31, 1996

"Mr. Speaker, Leona Brady Watson was born on the island of St. Croix. At the tender age of 3, she began her education, which involved walking from Estate Two Friends to Frederikdsted where she attended St. Patrick's School. After finishing the third grade, she journeyed to the United States, and completed her formal education there."

"Upon returning to St. Croix in the late 50's, Mrs. Watson came home with a special yearning for her culture. She spent many years learning about what was a dying art in the Virgin Islands, the art of cariso, from the elders, particularly the ones on the north side of the island and the Frederiksted area. Leona was able to attain and maintain our delicate culture through their stories, soups, and music of days gone by. Leona continues to be honored by various cultural organizations as a tradition bearer for her untiring contribution to the cultural growth of the Virgin Islands, and the knowledge of the history of our beloved homeland."

"Some of Leona's famed works include: Quoted in 3 published books; actress in the film, The Story of Cariso, nationally acclaimed; performance in numerous stage shows, on island and abroad; participated in the 24th Annual Festival of American Folklife, the Virgin Islands; program sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the Virgin Islands."

"Leona is also a highly respected herbologist who has been asked most recently to participate in cultural exchange between Africa (Senegal), China and Switzerland."

    Denise Griffitts Interviews Kimanzi Constable

I first interviewed author Kimanzi Constable in November of 2012 on Your Partner In Success Radio. He had written and self-published a little book called "Tales of the Everyday Workingman (and Woman)" that he sold an incredible 70,000 copies of (as of that interview date.) For 12 years he worked at a job that he absolutely hated. So much so that his days were consumed with thoughts of quitting. But as a family man with a wife and children to support, that was just not an option.

Things came to a breaking point in the summer of 2011. He was over $180,000 in debt, his marriage was falling apart, and his children barely knew him because he was always working. The cherry on the cake was that he was 170 pounds overweight.

In the back of his mind he had a dream of being a writer. How could that be possible, a guy with no college degree become a writer? More than that, he wanted freedom!

Three years ago Kimanzi finally got fed up enough to stop existing and to do something about his dream. He decided to stop listening to all those things keeping him from a life that he and his family truly deserved.

Today he is a contributing writer for The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, and Mind Body Green. He is a business editor at The Good Men Project. His mission is to help men and women create true freedom in life.

Today we are going to pick up the threads on Kimanzi's tale and find out how he lost 170 pounds and moved his family to Maui, Hawaii. We are going to find out how he came so far, so fast, and how you can as well. Yes, you can do that!
