Dogs on Deployment was founded by husband and wife, Shawn and Alisa Johnson, who serve in the US Navy and US Marine Corps respectively. They started Dogs on Deployment in June 2011. As a dual-military family, the founders have been in situations where they needed a program like Dogs on Deployment. Alisa had orders to move to Quantico, Virginia where she was to attend six months of military training. At the same time, Shawn, was to be deployed. Neither could care for their beloved dog, JD. They were lucky enough to have family to rely on, but recognized the need for a program which would help others who found themselves in a similar situation. Thus, Dogs on Deployment was born.
Founders Alisa and Shawn Johnson proudly own two miniature Australian Shepherds, JD and Jersey, and a Caique parrot, Kiki, who are the inspiration behind their work. They are also active fosters for Dogs on Deployment and local rescue groups.
***Alisa has also been nominated for 2013 Military Spouse of the Year!!***
I'm very proud & honored to bring you Alisa's story!!
Dog training and behavior expert and host, Julie Forbes, talks about working with reactive dogs effectively to decrease their reactivity and increase their confidence. Every dog is different, but there are some common themes that she has seen in over twelve years of working with dog behavior. Then Julie dives into the topic of leadership with your dog. What does it mean to be an authority to your dog? Are you supposed to be the "alpha"? Over 90% of Julie Forbes' private dog training clients have been women. Working with dogs brings up a lot around the topic of leaderhsip and women's relationship with their bodies. Tune in for this very informative and thought-provoking discussion. Nancy Boman, Chair of the Epilepsy Subcommittee of the Saint Bernard Club of America joins Julie Forbes today for a conversation about canine epilepsy. Nancy's Saint Bernard died from epilepsy recently and her experience has inspired her to work to educate in an effort to prevent the spread of this genetic trait.
Julie Forbes also went to the University of Washington campus last week with some therapy dogs to provide some stress-relief to college students studying for finals. Hear about her experience on today's show.

We have a special in depth show this week where we take a close look at the role of seizure alert service dogs.
Magnolia Paws for Compassion highlights the remarkable impact service dogs can have on people living with a variety of medical conditions, but most specifically, those who suffer from epilepsy.
To raise awareness of the widespread benefits of animal assistance, Magnolia Paws for Compassion has enlisted the help of Brandon McMillan, celebrity animal behaviorist and host of the Emmy-nominated television series Lucky Dog. Brandon has teamed up with Eisai, the Epilepsy Foundation and 4 Paws for Ability, a non-profit organization focused on the training and placement of service dogs for children.
Next we will speak with Karen Shirk, 4 Paws for Ability CEO, who trains and places seizure alert service dogs, and then Tom Penders, father of Becky, whoes family received a seizure assistance dog through Magnolia Paws for Compassion.
It is a fascinating and heart warming story to learn how these dogs are helping children and their families better cope and save lives. You will hear first hand accounts of how these dogs are trained and the everlasting bond they have with their new family.
We are starting the Show with Julie Hall Karlock, the administrator for the Facebook group, Dog Euphoria and the winner of the Dog Euphoria Fashion Week contest, Trish Aleve.
