Interview: Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary
ABOUT GENE BAUR Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. Since the mid-1980s, he has traveled extensively, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our system of cheap food production.
A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting the deplorable conditions that exist. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals.
Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2008, Gene’s book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, became a national bestseller. As a guest on The Martha Stewart Show’s first-ever “vegan show,” he inspired viewers to eat in alignment with their values of compassion. Gene began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues. Today, he serves as president of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with shelters in New York and California.
Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University.Tags: animal rescue how to stop animal cruelty farm animal abuse what is factory farming animal cruelty cases

Guest: Sherry Snider
Charmaine welcomes Sherry Snider to the show. Sherry, a Technical Writer evolved over years of teaching (English, reading, & speech), then, working in the IT (Information Technology) field. After documenting hundreds of technical processes and teaching others how to duplicate results, technical writing and training became the next logical career path. After many happy years of corporate employment as a documentation specialist and technical trainer, opportunities for independent contract and freelance work opened even more doors. Sherry still takes technical writing, multimedia, training, and consulting projects in a variety of industries. Though hardware and software are usually her favorite projects, pretty much any customer with cool toys and tech to master has a good chance of capturing her interest…especially if her specific experience and skills offer significant value to the project or customer/client. Since much of Sherry’s world revolves around highly technical documentation, electronic media, and curriculum, she also likes to blow off steam by working with her hands. Crafting, woodworking, wood burning, and sculpting polymer clay provide an alternative to the computing world. Then, of course, she documents and writes about those projects, too. Host Charmaine Hammond is the author of On Toby's Terms (Bettie Youngs Books) which is being turned into a major motion picture (see www.ontobysterms.com). She also authored Toby The Pet Therapy Dog & His Hospital Friends, GPS Your Best Life and Toby Says Be a Buddy Not a Bully. She has developed a program for authors, Your Book As a Business, where she shares her learnings, lessons and success about the business of books.
