    Suicide

    in Christianity

Suicide takes the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans every year. Many who attempt suicide never seek professional care. There are twice as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. Between 1952 and 1995, suicide in young adults nearly tripled. Over half of all suicides occur in adult men, ages 25-65.

For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the second leading cause of death. Suicide rates among the elderly are highest for those who are divorced or widowed. 80% of people that seek treatment for depression are treated successfully.15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide. There are an estimated 8 to 25 attempted suicides to 1 completion. The highest suicide rate is among men over 85 years old: 65 per 100,000 persons.
1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 die by suicide each year.

A New Strategy for Suicide Prevention

    in Health

Drs. Barbara Stanley and J. John Mann will be speaking

Every year, there are more than 30,000 suicides and ten times as many suicide attempts in the United States.  Better prevention is urgently required. That requires improving our knowledge of the causes of suicidal behavior.  We know psychiatric disorders, most commonly major depression, are associated with suicide. But most people with a psychiatric disorder never attempt suicide. The group at higher risk of suicide have a predisposition to suicidal behavior. Learning about how genes and childhood experiences affect how we deal with stress, depression and make decisions, and how those functions are in turn related to brain functioning are key to understanding why people die by suicide.  The Conte Center for Translational Neuroscience at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, has been at the forefront of this research.

Differences in brain circuitry in suicide attempters are linked to the predisposition to suicidal behavior and are the result of a combination of genes and childhood adversity. Evaluating brain circuitry of family members of those who have suicided or made serious nonlethal suicide attempts may identify a higher risk group.  The Conte Center for Suicide Prevention uses two brain imaging modalities, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), along with several biobehavioral measures to study risk and resilience factors for suicide in patients with major depression.

In this radio program, we will describe how we seek to prevent suicide by studying the brain biology and abnormalities in stress coping and mood regulation that increase risk of suicidal behavior, and then seeking ways to reverse these effects.

CUTV News Radio spotlights Catherine Abbott of Heal After Divorce

    in Motivation

Vancouver, BC – Few life experiences compare to the emotional devastation of divorce. Many women find themselves stuck in their cycle of despair, but there are ways to move forward and to have an even better life after divorce.

Catherine Abbott is the founder of Heal After Divorce, a coaching practice dedicated to supporting women to move forward with their lives after divorce.

“Loss and grief are natural when coping with divorce or a relationship breakup,” says Catherine. “It is normal to have emotional suffering when someone you love leaves or even if you are the one initiating leaving the relationship.”

Catherine was inspired to create Heal After Divorce following the dissolution of her marriage.

“The ending of my marriage forced me to reconsider my life," says Catherine. "There were opportunities for me. I got to see myself in a new light. I decided it was important to support other women through this process so they can learn these techniques and find ways to express what they need to express in appropriate ways to move forward and heal.”

Divorce can be extremely isolating. We all have friends and family we can talk to about our divorce, but of course we’ll only tell them certain things. Our deep, dark secrets are our own and they’re not as easy to share. As a coach, Catherine is there to support you to see there are ways to move forward.

“The saddest thing is when I talk to a woman who has been divorced for 10 years and she’s still angry and still hurting,” says Catherine. “As soon as someone commits to wanting to change, that’s the first step, so I’m grateful to support other women on their journey.”
